Credit where it is due, Panasonic did a marvelous job with these little five hundred dollar cameras. They would be staggeringly good at any price, wonderfully flexible bits of gear.

Christ knows how much the pissant red wankdot costs though.

Ps ... :DHah. Just seen the bar fine for the makeover. Another head shaker.

The Panasonic is selling for around $450 in the US, while the Leica version, from what I have read, will be around $400 more. Is the extra Leica tariff worth it? Guess we'll have to wait and see.

What I don't understand is we are constantly being told by Leica that micro four thirds sensors don't produce a good enough picture quality, yet they bring out these rebadged Panasonic's with even small sensors.

No. Have a look at the FZ range. Budget buck giant killers.

A friend has just bought the new Panasonic DMC-FZ100 which appears to be the Panasonic version of the Leica V-Lux 2. I had a quick look at it a couple of days ago.

Somehow or other I guessed it might make it into Leica form as a new V-Lux.

The zoom range appears impressive, but the Panasonic model doesn't feel quite as solid as the old V-lux 1.

Whilst the new large screen appears impressive - it doesn't have the twist and flip versatility of the V-lux 1.

One of the nice things about the V-Lux 1 was the manual zoom which having had a Digilux 2 and still using a Digilux 3 I prefer.

The new offering also appears to make a lot about its movie and sound recording capabilities. In the decade that I have had digital cameras I have probably shot around 25 film clips. It isn't an important feature and what bothers me is that some of the cost of the camera pays for this unecessary gadgetry rather than being incorporated into the still imaging element.

I look forward to seeing my friends results with his DMC-FZ100- but will probably say pass on either the Leica or Panasonic versions.

The only exciting product is the new M9T - but that is well out of my price league.

A successor to the Digilux 2 with a large sensor would have been the preferred new product news so I must say I am a bit disappointed at todays news. Though I welcome the black X1 - looks much better like that and hopefully I will acquire one of these in the not too distant future.

No, as I said in post #8 it is the FZ-100.

I think that if you are considering one of this type of camera and are concerned about bang per buck, the Fuji HS 10 has the edge and it's only 288 GBP at Amazon and 256 elsewhere!!!!

24mm-720mm manual (does not drain battery) zoom! Now, tell me about the X1 again.

Thank you John, you took the words out of my mouth. No D2 successor, no R solution. Simply disappointing. :(

I mean, if I needed a camera with the specifications of a V-Lux or D-Lux, I could buy the corresponding Panasonic products. What many people REALLY want is an original, advanced Leica camera.

Well, impressive zoom range. However, the users complain about poor image quality at focal lengths below 50 mm in many reports about this camera, i.e. in the wide angle range.

It will be interesting to see how the image quality of the V-Lux 2 will be.

I'm sure Leica will purport some technical fol-de-rol about image processing algorithms and color fidelity to justify the 400-500 price differential over the Panasonic version. I

didn't notice software inclusion - cheap OEM versions of Adobe elements stuff - or any

"extras" like an additional battery or ergonomic "neoprene" case. It's evidently smaller

than the Vlux1 and significantly more bulky than the d-lux X, but it does have the

red dot mystique.

Is this the camera that will let me dump my Canon stuff? I am so over the bulky DSLR lenses but there are times when a zoom is a necessity, a macro invaluable and a big honkin' camera body & lens makes me look serious.

Have they done it?

I would like to think so, Linda, but if the V-Lux 2's sensor is the size that I think it is, don't sell your old gear prematurely. I'm witholding any opinion until I can see the image quality results, but some say that the Panasonic verson is not very good over ISO 400. That alone just may be the deal-breaker for me.
