To me it seems the Fuji is a totally different type of camera than the X1. I'll use both.

 

In what way? They both use the same size sensor and the both have a fixed 35mm lens. It would seem to me the Fuji have 'improved' on the X1 with the optical viewfinder. I would expect image quality to be as good for two reasons:

 

1. Fuji have a larger R&D budget.

2. An extra year of technological advancement.

 

I just HOPE Leica have an announcement at Photokina.

I think the sole determinant is IQ, so no use talking till we see sample images. Things always look rosy at launch. Look at the sony nex, now yesterday's news. Meanwhile the X1 still gets slammed for being expensive, loose dials, etc,etc...but all are in agreement it has great IQ, if not the greatest for compacts.

Yes, that was my thoughts... and yes, all cameras take pictures. I'm thinking the Fuji will still be quite heavy...closer to M8 than X1. If I'm wrong, then it is closer to the X1. All I know is that it looks great, but I won't be selling my X1 to buy it... I'll just buy it outright.

This reaction to this camera reflects the pent up demand many of us have had for a small (ala CL) high quality digital. For me, the X1, despite having decent IQ just didn't make it. To me Leica has failed in three areas so far. They are poor quality control, very poor service after sales with months and too many emails and phone calls required for fixes, and finally, too little for the price.

 

Go to the first page of the M9 or this forum for examples: Shutter blades that stick or jam, sensors that crack, coverings that peel, battery doors that don't close properly, pink edges on images, etc. Maybe this camera will spur Leica to address some of these issues and produce a camera (s) that IS the creme of the crop and warrants its high price. They aren't there yet by a long way and waste far too much time and money on "special editions" rather than real improvements.

Every product and company has some lemons that come out of its production line... why would Leica be any different?

 

The M9 warrants its large price due to the fact that it is a hand assembled niche product with a small audience of potential buyers. If you want a digital manual focus rangefinder, then the M9 is the creme of the crop.

Barjohn, I totally agree with... unless of course after introduction of the final product, mid 2011 we find out that: the shutter blades that stick or jam, sensors that crack, coverings that peel, battery doors that don't close properly, pink edges on images, etc and that the service is worse than Leica's .... hmmm food for thought no?

 

I actually don't agree with you at all, I find the Leica service magnificent, their after service great, phone them anytime you like with whatever questions and you will get a reply .... anyway water under a different bridge.... have you ever thought of the fact that they (meaning Leica) might not like you? .... :-)

The X1 is a boutique camera made in a comparably small number. Leica hasn't even been able to keep up with demand for the past year. If they discontinue it, I think prices will remain high.

 

And prices will drop some over the years, but look at the Digilux 2 and 3. Those haven't been made for several years now and their prices are ridiculously high for old digital cameras.

 

Because it's a Leica, the X1 will always have a niche resale market and will never become worthless the way a five-year-old Canon Powershot might.

Probably not as fuji "seems" to have done their homework.... I for one will accept a slight loss in IQ/lens performance as long as I can get the shot in the situations I take images in....... something that I found impossible with the X1 which has been my only gripe with the X1.

I'm not so sure there would be any IQ loss with this Fujinon lens compared to the X1, and the lens design looks quite complicated. Fuji makes some of the best primes from any maker, whether German or Japanese. Hasselblad decided to use Fuji as their lens maker a long time ago.

I think you are missing the point. Without the X1 there would be no Fuji X100. Now that we have the X100 the next Leica X2 (?) will be an even better camera, and will be brought to market even sooner.

 

We as photographers can only benefit.

 

So come on Leica, where's the X2? And I want a fixed Tri-Elmar lens on it.

Good luck wishing for a tri elmar, I think the X1 has lived out its life. For what it is... its a great little package that comes at a premium price though, but so does the rest of the red dot gear. I'm hoping that leica will preserve and concentrate on there flagship line which is now the M9 series and faster lens offerings that they currently have. And also the S2 with more lens too soon.
