If the new rumored Leica EVIL camera to be announced on Monday has better performance specifications including an electronic viewfinder will X1 values plummet as owners sell them off to buy the newer camera? Especially if it has faster AF, and maybe interchangeable lenses?

The thing I dread is one of these two scenarios: A huge price, or low quality of everything but the lens. Then again, if it's a version of a Panasonic at a not-too-inflated price, with Leica lens, that would be very interesting.

Most likely not much at retail, but in the used market. But then ALL digital cameras suffer the same fate?

If the new EVIL (assuming it comes out) is APS-C or FF, then it is worth considering IMO. Anything less even with interchangeable lens I personally wouldnt be interested as it will be a downgrade for me (or probably a panasonic rebadged). If it indeed is an improvement I might buy it with a 35mm, but it has to be better and hopefully not too much bigger.

I am really hoping that it is set between the X1 and M9, and with AF.

The rumours are entirely speculation currently of course. At least it would be a very high risk bet to try to sell off an X1 in anticipation :)

My guess would be that the hinted shape need not be an EVIL camera though. These threads will be fun to follow up once photokina dawns I imagine.

Yes. This applies to all digital cameras and new technology in general. And there is absolutely zip you can do to future-proof yourself against this fact. Just make sure you get the best value out of any product while you can.

Values will remain the same , prices might go down. An evil Leica with interchangeable af lenses will i) attract new customers, ii) be added to the arsenals of M and or X1 users, iii) be considered as a replacement for Digilux2 owners.

One of the strength of the X1 is its leight weight and pocketability ( without vf and grip) no reason to ditch it for a bulkier evil system.

An improved X1.2 addessing some of the X1's shortcomings, or even a FF X1, would be a different story.

I'd imagine Leica is a lot smarter than that. Do you honestly think they'd be naive enough to introduce a new model just a year later that could cannibalize the X1? Come now :D, there's plenty of room, price wise, to differentiate a new model from the X1 and the M9.

How about something in between the M9 and S2, smaller, less expensive, with AF and mounts Summarit-S lenses?

Think the bulk will put me off, in which case there will be more cameras (and cheaper options) to consider, especially with dslrs getting smaller and better...

I think for me at least size is a primary consideration, which is why I like my X1.

I do not think it will cannibalize the X1 sales, since the X1 is a unique camera which is incredible for travel and everyday shots. With interchangeable lens systems the considerations are different, likely more dedicated uses where the choice of the lens becomes paramount too. With the X1 it is absolute simplicity and one lens.

Indeed. And many are still waiting for the Digilux2.2, that would be a feast.

Come to think of it, the value of X1 may maintain at retail or even INCREASE for used if the supposed new Leica doesn't hold up. Right now many are anticipating something great from the Leica camp but if the new camera has smaller sensor, or is a rebranded panasonic, etc, etc that may even drive people towards the X1? The way I see it right now for this size of camera there is only 4: X1, Sigma DP, Ricoh with prime, sony nex with pancake. The X1 trumps all based on this configuration. So if nothing spectacular comes out, people who wants portability and great IQ now realizes that their options are what it is right now so the X1 sales may even shoot up...

Or make some minor improvements in the X2 and price even higher?!! That'll work too. The people who complain about Leica pricing most probably are not the target audience anyway.
