Back to Solms?

So I finally got my own M9 after borrowing and lusting after one since this spring.

And whaddyaknow - the day after I paid up the invoice, the lens locking mechanism falls off! After a total of 277 shots and maybe five lens changes.

I have tried to screw it back, but it is not accurate and comes out again after a little while. I dont want to get stuck in a big job with lenses that dont fit the camera...

It also has severe pink edges syndrome, despite the latest firmware.

What to do? Does Leica have a DOA (dead on arrival) program like Nikon has?

I have notified the dealer but want to hear from you guys what I can expect first.

The pink edge picture is shot with a correctly coded 35cron asph.

Thanks in advance for any input!

I had a different problem with my M9. I contacted Leica US and sent the camera back.

They took care of it and fixed the problem within 2 weeks. You should contact your dealer (depends on whether you mail order or not) to handle the shipping.

From my experience, Leica is very responsive with this kind of problems.

The brightline preview lever fell off mine after the camera had been returned for a failed SD reader. They sent the part to my dealer, who had it put on locally by the Leica repairman. Yours should not be complicated but I find these construction failures disconcerting. Didn't used to happen.

ad 1. And your dealer should not charge you any transport costs; mine does'nt anyway during the warranty period (if there is a probleme under warranty)

ad 2. Hmm.... Did you have the latest firmware installed and was lens recognition on auto and have you checked in Info if the lens was recognised?

It came with the latest firmware factory installed. (i had it for only two days before it fell off) Lens was manually entered through the menu and correctly identified in the EXIF.

Parts shouldnt fall off a $7000 camera after just two days of careful use.

That makes me think what else is going to fail after the warranty period is out.

Especially not one from Leica who toot their "durability and reliability"-horn so loud.

Try auto lens recognition.

And I sympathize with the rant, but it doesn't change a thing.

I remember buying my first Leica M. That was in 1979, a M4-2, and the shop was in Buenos Aires. Back at the hotel the thingy that opens the bottom hang loose. Immediately went back and got another M4-2. Shit happens, not only nowadays. As I said: nothing has changed.

Me I'd just attach the button to a dowel with a light drop of silicone adhesive

and let it set up overnight. Then just screw the lever back on... the will allow

enough grip to get it reasonably tight before it tears loose from the button when tight.

Easy to clean off the button after done. I think you were lucky not to loose the parts

in the field without noticing where. Easy fix.

Amazing there isnt a screwdriver cut across it. Guess that wouldnt look the part.

Every time my MP came back from Leica I had to tighten loose stuff up because they dont understand how useless a camera is when bits drop off it.

That smooth release would screw me. Personally I would work out a way to tighten it properly and or use loctite.

Ps V ... Well if you leave the dowel on it Jaap, you have a better chance of finding it:rolleyes:.

Seems to me to be a short cut to guaranty loss...

I am not going to use loctite on a two-day old M9 that needs to back because of sensor issuses anyway...

Either way, the dealer promises they are on the case and we shall see what happens.

Doubt if much happens before the end of Photokina though...

...what sort of warranty and passport validity periods are ascribed to these digital cameras by Leica? Do they differ from those of the film Ms?

I have two years Passport warranty on my M9 (later cameras one year I believe), and a major repair/CLA will produce a year's extended guaranty if the camera has less than a year left. However consumer law may demand fit for purpose for at least five years in Europe.

...the last MP body I purchased (late 2008) came with a 3-year passport and 5-year warranty. Sounds like Leica's expectations are not unreasonably different for film and digital bodies. Hmmm.

Don't use loctite ..... not even a little drop of the low strength small screw variety

only sold at speciality suppliers. Just a tiny bit of of non-hardening thread sealer

applied with the end of a toothpick if anything. Personally, I keep it dry and just

check it from time to time. This will not void the warrantee .... how would anyone know?

It's just a screw for heavens sake. Yes, a slot would be better I think. I wouldn't

mind if that button wasn't a tad taller anyway.

As I have been buying some old-new stock recently I can compare. My recent M6 ( built sometime in the early 90-ies but sold new last week) came with a two-year guaranty. But a factory-new R8 bought a few months ago with five-years. It seems it has not much to do with digital or film.
