Iron Flatline Posted January 9, 2007 Share #1 Posted January 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi all. I just got an M8, and I really am pleased I did. I wanted something that makes me think about composition, and what I want to happen in the shot. I got it right the first time out:) I think I'm going to like this camera a lot... I've had no time to work with it. I picked it up in LA the day before leaving on a five-week trip, so the first place I got to actually "shoot it in anger" was at the Delta terminal at JFK in New York. Thank goodness for long distance flights and laptops. Hand-held shot M8 w. 28mm Elmarit f/2.8 Asph. w. 6-bit encoding 1/11th of sec 640 ISO Auto-WB Curves adjusted in PS, but otherwise this is a DNG straight off chip, resized and saved as JPG. Rolo Posted January 9, 2007 Share #2 Posted January 9, 2007 Hi, the image carries a strong green tint. I removed it and think that it enhances this image. Would you like me to post it here ? No prob if not. Rolo
stuny Posted January 9, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 9, 2007 Iron - Welcome to the Forum. Your first M8 photo is most promising for its geometry, depth and composition. I too feel the light source green tint to be bothersome, but if that was your intent, then the issue is just personal choice. Nice photo, nice camera, and keep those photos coming. BTW: With all those locations listing where you are it suggests that the sherrifs in several towns gave you 'til sunset to leave :-)
Iron Flatline Posted January 9, 2007 Author Share #4 Posted January 9, 2007 Hi Rolo, go ahead and post a color-corrected one. I must say though that the place was actually green. The floor was some kind of greenish tarazo stone. If I look at the blurred woman's head and hair, it is definitely green though (and noisy!). And I just calibrated my laptop, too! I squeezed that in before running off to the airport. I'll also take a stab at in Photoshop... still haven't figured out Capture One. stuny, the law will never catch me. NEVER....Muahahahahaahaha Nah, I'm just a boring guy in a suit, but with a great hobby and fancy gear.
Rolo Posted January 9, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 9, 2007 First of all Iron, let me apologise for not commenting positively on the image, before jumping to a correction. It's nice and fresh, caught the motion well which I think is essential to your shot. Frozen would have been bad, motion is good. The composition is really nice and it comes together well. Must be terrific to be out there with your new tool. May we benefit from many more postings. The image without green tint is attached. I've not 'colour corrected' it, just zapped the tint. I asked because I don't like people posting my images back, but with you travelling thought it might help. Regards, Rolo
Iron Flatline Posted January 9, 2007 Author Share #6 Posted January 9, 2007 Thank you. I appreciate the kind comments, and the effort spent on the image. I like it a lot better. What did you do, so I can do the same off my DNG?
Rolo Posted January 9, 2007 Share #7 Posted January 9, 2007 Advertisement (gone after registration) In Photoshop CS2: Image/Adjustments/Match Colour/ tick Neutralise box. If it's too clean, increase the Fade slider until you get what you like. 100% is back to the full tint. Sometimes, with a sunset for example, you might want to retain 60% of the tint. Often I'll keep 20% just to keep more colour in. It's personal and there's no rights or wrongs. Just enjoy. Have a great trip, Rolo
Rolo Posted January 9, 2007 Share #8 Posted January 9, 2007 By the way, this will also impact any magenta cast, but the IR filters are still needed. It's playtime. Rolo
stuny Posted January 9, 2007 Share #9 Posted January 9, 2007 Iron - I prefer Rolo's version and hope you will post the final version once you're pleased with the results.
Iron Flatline Posted January 9, 2007 Author Share #10 Posted January 9, 2007 Ok, unfortunately the original version is gone. I replaced it with my corrected version on my blog (which is where it was linked from) but I never saved the other version beyond a quick work-up because I was so excited to show it off. The corrected version is here: Note that I did some curve adjustments, but I also increased the saturation. That brought out some warmer reflected tones. It's still noisy. I also used an app called Nik Sharpener Pro to sharpen some of the lines in the ceiling and walls. Feel free to comment. I'm glad to have found a community where people have real opinions, and advice on how to make some changes.
jmr Posted January 9, 2007 Share #11 Posted January 9, 2007 Iron, good shot. It has a futuristic, movie-like quality to it in my opinion.
