Danny , I thought the landscape looked familiar..so one of the Gulf Islands?

This is a great shot, well executed and your not afraid to roll in the mud to get the shot... getting to his eye level really makes this.

Welcome to the forum and its nice to finally have another Vancouverite on the forum.

Regards, Leicamann

Welcome to the Forum, and I hope you keep posting your photos -- You have an excellent eye. I really like the subject, light, colors, selective focus, ground-level angle, and framing with the just out of focus stick and in focus rocks in the foreground. Superb.

Thank you for making me welcome. Leicaman, the photo was actually taken at Arcola Beach (some call it Wreck Beach) just south of Spanish Bank. The GVRD park patrol informed me that baby seals are often left on the beach by the mother. I waited until the high tide came back and there was the mother waiting for the baby to go back in the water. It was a fantastic scene to witness. Oh! By the way, no mud here, just pebbles and sand...

Cheers!

Danny, great photo as stu suggested that out of focus background and stick. I feel that the out of focus is ok if you just wanted to capture the seal by itself. Try next time for a greater DOF.

Keep shooting

Depth of Field is perfect as it is. Just the eyes and the wiskers. Even the rest of the body is out of focus. This is exactly what this photo needs!

Thanks again for the comments. The dof was intentional. There is always lots to see on a beach. But here the baby seal was the most important to me. How often can you crawl towards a baby seal to take a photo? I have an 11X16 of this picture on my wall and the eyes of the baby seal is what you immediately look at. If I had changed the dof to include more of the body or even the landscape behind it would not have had the same effect (on me anyway).

Cheers!

Daniel
