How necessary is the X1 handgrip, really?

This may be revisiting, but I am going to the camera shop soon, and would like comments from users of the handgrip. It aint cheap, and I am doing ok without the handgrip but curious if it will improve grip even more, and if so by how much. I do not mind buying but do not wish to squander my dole needlessly either.

How much does it actually help? I am currently using a wrist strap which also help to stabilize the camera grip in some way.

Necessary? No,

Useful? Yes.

I am glad I purchased mine.

I also bought a case, which I consider next to useless except one can store the camera in it. The case is bulky and hard and seems to get in the way more than help.

When you said useful how so? How often do you use it? thanks.

How big are your hands? Mine are on the smaller large side(I know that doesn't make sense, I'm 6'5" but thin-ish) and the handgrip is a wash..neither good nor bad. I returned it as it wasn't wirth the price for me. I'm thinking the thumbs up is a better option...hopefully. If I was an average 5'8-9" or smaller I would think it was much more helpful.

I am 5'7" but considered with big hands...if I am hearing it right and that the grip is neither good or bad then thats a real no-no for me...does the grip work better with smaller hands, thats what you are saying?

I would think so. I lay my middle finger over the top of it and grip with the bottom two, which isn't exactly ideal. At your height, even with big hands for your height..I think it would be a good addition honestly. My hand from palm to finger tip is close to 8 inches, not the standard, but not enormous. I add only to try and help. I do think if I were of smaller frame it would be a much better solution.

Why not simply go to a dealer and try it for yourself?

Thats what I am gonna do, but sometimes it may/may not be in stock, and I do not feel nice if I order one and subsequently reject it. I always do my little homework before going to the store anyway...

Trying for yourself is the way to go.

I had one on mine and I didn't feel the improvement it's supposed to make. I didn't like the cheapish feel of it either.

Without having tried one my guess is that a Thumbs Up could be a better option. Or a half/full case from the likes of Luigi with an integrated grip.

Right now I kinda get the feeling I am not going to want it.....problem also is here there is no return policy, once bought I have to sell as used...

Thanks for telling me, now it means it can still be every useful for me, gonna go try it then. From what you described makes sense to me given my smaller hands compared to yours. :)

I dont have one but have to say that without a grip its not easy to use the x1 one handed.

I would assume you can hold the x1 more stable and also better one handed with the grip.

On the other side for me one of the main reasons for the x1 is its size - so I wouldnt want to add any bulk and I am happy without a grip.

Actually with an appropriate wrist strap I have no big problems holding the X1, I just thought maybe the grip will improve the feel better, but it doesnt look like it will increase bulk a lot more. Only thing left is to try the grip:)

The Luigi case with the built-in hand grip is an option. I really like the added bulk it gives to the camera, much more secure in my hand.

I do not have the habit of slinging the X1, I usually leave it in a waist pouch, and the tiniest one possible. That is why I never considered the Luigi, must admit the thing looks stylish though.:)

Even if you plan on carrying the X1 in a bag most of the time, the case provides some very reassuring protection.

I may look at it too, though there is no opportunity to feel one in person? All of my stuff I buy in actual stores, not the net. Is the Luigi really that good and doesnt leather attract fungi in this hot, humid tropical weather?
