mark_s Posted August 31, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I was just checking out the camera stats on Flickr and noticed a recent surge in M8 usage. The graph shows a steady but slow decline over the past year followed by a very recent sharp increase. M9 usage on Flickr appears to be increasing steadily, but that's to be expected for a new model. However, the sudden increase in usage of a now discontinued model I find very intriguing. Any ideas? JeTexas Posted August 31, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 31, 2010 I think the announcement of the M9 spurred many people who had an M8 sitting around to sell it on eBay. The influx of affordable, used M8s into the market has allowed an entirely new crop of photographers to start shooting with it.
Double Negative Posted September 1, 2010 Share #3 Posted September 1, 2010 ^ Agreed. The slowly improving availability of the M9 helps too. New M9 shooters and turnover on the M8s...
wstotler Posted September 1, 2010 Share #4 Posted September 1, 2010 I'd noticed the dip, also. But the spike was new--thanks for pointing it out. I'm thinking that the usage spike has real potential to continue climbing. As more amateurs pick up used M8s I'm going to hazard a guess that many of the used M8s will end up shooting more shots that end up on Flickr as the demographic for the shooters will change--younger (on average), more engaged with digital, more engaged with Flickr, etc. I'd think you'd see an increase in CV glass, also, if they would track that. Purely speculative, of course. Cheers! Will

bill Posted September 2, 2010 Share #7 Posted September 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Just out of curiosity, can you tell if there has been a net increase in the number of posters concomitant with the net increase in the number of posts? Or are the same people just posting more? Regards, Bill

Paul Glendell Posted September 2, 2010 Share #9 Posted September 2, 2010 Well I'm one of the people who bought a 'cheap' M8 on ebay about a month ago as my M6 was hardly being used and it was a shame to leave the lenses lying idle. No photos on flickr from the M8 but already had many accepted in photo libraries and I await to celebrate the first M8 photo sale. Conference commission tomorrow and I picked up my Nikon D2xs for the first time in about a month today to check it out for the shoot and it felt massive and heavy. Still I can't use a long les on the M8 but I'll be back with is ASAP. Paul Glendell www.glendell.co.uk
camnoj Posted September 3, 2010 Share #10 Posted September 3, 2010 I also have just purchased an M8 because of the price drop triggered by the release of the M9 what an amazing camera, I'm hooked. I did wait specifically for the M9 to be released knowing that it was likely that the M8 price would drop. I purchased an ex-demo M8 from a dealer complete with unregistered Passport.
