Advertisement Posted September 6, 2010 Posted September 6, 2010 Hi jaapv, Take a look here X1-The greatest travel camera ever!. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Guest badbob Posted September 6, 2010 Share #82  Posted September 6, 2010 I was in a photo/art processing place the other day and took a pic of the host's little doggie with an X1, under terrible conditions, lighting and cramped surroundings, lack of time to get the shot etc. And when she saw the result, she just wanted to borrow the X1 for a week or so, despite having a D700 with nice lenses and a new Gitzo with super ballhead.  And OTOH, there was another guest/customer there with a Canon Rebel XT with a decent lens who let me take a few snaps with his camera. And great snaps they were - crystal clear, sharp as heck, good color - who could want more? And not a terribly large thing to carry around either.  So, unarguably I think, all of these were and are great cameras, but each has its limitations, and they're not a mystery that's going to trip us up in the middle of a vacation, I don't think.  And BTW, I can't imagine paying $2000 for a compact camera with no zoom and few other features - obviously nowhere near the capability of a Pana GH1 for example, and take off out of country with only that camera, not knowing what to expect. Seems crazy, or reckless at least. Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! phancj Posted September 7, 2010 Author Share #83  Posted September 7, 2010 Whatever. Read what I wrote: not only have I admitted I'm new to the X1, with barely more than a thousand activations[1], but my main criticism of the camera (shutter lag) is well observed in many reviews of the X1, and isn't the strongest criticism one can make about a camera. I've posted shots from it that I love. The X1 is very criticizable; not sure that's a controversial statement. A grip: get one.  [1] I guessed it at between 6-700 shots before, but my Lightroom library has 715 X1 shots, and I know I've deleted several hundred already.  I think the X1 is not an automatic point and shoot like I explained before, but it is a very easy to use camera. I am sure your settings are off for that shot, it doesnt help to complain if you are here to learn maybe like the correct settings under those circumstances. The M8 also requires a learning curve.  Having said that I have compared the images from the X1 and the M8 with summicron 35mm and the images are comparable, with the X1 much better at high iso. Talk about the M9 and I think its a different story altogether.  Bottom line is show us the off-focused shots and their settings, there may be some who can help you here. Otherwise quit complaining and sell the camera.
prk60091 Posted September 7, 2010 Share #84 Â Posted September 7, 2010 I can show you many missed 'action' or 'bird' shots that were taken with my dlux4 a true p &s . I am going on an extended vacation next month with the x1 and a clux (with under water enclosure for snorkeling) as my only gear and I am looking forward to shooting the x1 daily under a variety of circumstances. I may even shoot a bird or 2.

Remember to post those shots asap, I am also in the midst of looking out for action shots, think we must start a "X1 decisive moment thread" and get Ravinj to post his numerous action shots to start with! Â And yes, more birds, please. I am starting with fishes tomorrow.
jto555 Posted September 14, 2010 Share #86  Posted September 14, 2010 Apart from the fact that it's not a rangefinder and doesn't have interchangeable lenses  If only we could have a Tri-Elmar lens. Say a 24mm, 35mm and a 60mm and all at F2.8 (or F2.0)  I can but dream...

Perhaps, depending upon where you are vacationing and doing your diving/snorkeling, you can capture some diving ducks and keep phancj happy while at the same time proving that not only are bird "shots" possible but action ones, too? ravinj Posted September 15, 2010 Share #88  Posted September 15, 2010 keep phancj happy  It is getting very hard to keep CJ happy. Besides, I don't understand this obsession with birds. Especially the ones that are moving. Why shoot a moving bird when you can easily shoot a bird that is still?  Welcome, dear visitor! phancj Posted September 15, 2010 Author Share #89  Posted September 15, 2010 It is not an obsession with birds guys, but rather with the heat the X1 is taking for being slow, etc,etc it is nice when some X1 user proves otherwise.  You delivered again, Ravinj as expected always. I am putting together an X1 contest soon, no guesswork who is gonna win when there is a bird theme:D

RichardM8 Posted September 15, 2010 Share #91 Â Posted September 15, 2010 Yes, that would be the ultimate lens for me too. In f/2.0 please... Â Â Errmm... $6000 ? or wouldn't that be enough sir?...

Errmm... $6000 ? or wouldn't that be enough sir?...  Why stop at f2.0 when we can have the summilux at 1.4??  The X1 is fine as it is, of course any improvement is most welcome, but without breaking the bank, and not making it any bigger or heavier. In our dreams.... phancj Posted September 15, 2010 Author Share #93  Posted September 15, 2010 Not to upset the moderators or anything, but this shot I took earlier this year in Northern India on the streets...a quick grabshot, look at the sharpness of the elmarit on the X1! And it is heavily downsized btw (like 200+ kb??!!)... Welcome, dear visitor! As registered member you'd see an image here… Simply register for free here – We are always happy to welcome new members! jto555 Posted September 15, 2010 Share #94  Posted September 15, 2010 Funny,, but that is the only type of zoom I'd want... no in-between... just three decent focal lengths.  And the optical viewfinder would be easy. Just three bright lines.  A 24mm for getting into the middle of the action, a 35mm for general pics and a 60mm for (loosely cropped) portraits. The most important thing is that it has to fit in my pocket, both physically and financially...
r28551 Posted September 19, 2010 Share #95  Posted September 19, 2010 I don't mean to be antagonistic, but I just don't get threads like this. I don't know any other forum where members are so concerned with assuring themselves and the world that their camera is better than others. It's great to be thrilled with your gear, but why this incessant need to declare it better than everyone else's?  John  It's human nature John. When you play a LOT of money for something, you look for evidence to confirm and validate your decision. Its called cognitive dissonance reduction.  It's why I'm on the forum. I know it's a great camera, but to reduce my guilt at spending half the GDP of a third world nation, I like to keep hearing that I've made a smart move:D
