Anybody using an X1 with a SF 24 D flash unit?

Hi,

I have not used the SF 24D flash unit.

However, I have found out when you put the flash in studio mode that you can fire a Nikon SB 800 set up in remote mode as a slave. Works great!

Great pic! I have an old sb 600 so I will have to give that a shot. Hoping to use something a little more portable, like the SF 24D, for other situations.

The SB 600 doesn't have built-in wireless remote capability like the SB 800.

I have both the SF24D and an X1. However, I did not test the flash unit with X1 yet, simply because I bought the camera 1 week ago and did not have the opportunity to use them combined yet.

Please post some shots of the sf 24d mounted on the x1. Also, if you get around to it I would love to see some comparison shots between the pop up and the sb 24d.

I would be interested in a flash extenwion cord. Anybody know of one that is compatible? A simple one will trigger the flash, but a better one would transfer all of the functions. Thanks.

The Nikon SC-17 or SC-28 cables work fine with Leica cameras and flashes. :)

Here are some pictures my X1 dressed in leather and naked, both with the SF24D on top of her! I don't want to convert this thread into a camera porn one though! There are ladies in the room!! :D

I use the Nikon SC-17 cable when I am using the SF24D with my Digilux 2 and CM, and it works pretty well. In the last LFI issue there was article about flash photography and they used a X1 with a SF24d and the Nikon cable. Quite interesting article!

I am already owing some tests for the Digilux 2 followers comparing macro adapters, but I will try to do something with the SF24D for you!

Thanks Carlos! That doesn't look half as ridiculous as I thought it would. ;) I appreciate you taking the time and uploading some camera porn!

No rush, but once you finish with the digilux 2 folks it would be most awesome if you could do the same here. In return I will award you with copious amounts of thanks and gratitude!!

:D

Cheers!

Thank you, Nicole. I have one of those already, so I won't even have to spend any more money! :)

So aside from not being able to tilt the flash up for a bounce effect indoors, what would the pros/cons of going with the SF-24D over an SF-58 be?

Also, does the older SF-20D model that predates the 24D still allow TTL on the X1? Those are much cheaper used on eBay.

  • 4 months later...

For what it is worth, Santa brought me a SF 58 to use with my M9 for those tough lighting situations. For the hell of it, I mounted it on my X1. A couple things:

X1 is AMAZING using the bounce flash indoors

It is almost twice as heavy as the X1 and very unbalanced

It looks absolutely ridiculous on the X1

;)

Can it be done? Yes. Does it work? Yes. Is it practical outside of using it with a tripod? Not really.

I must have a special model because my SB 600 remote fires.

...but I digress; we will try to steer back on topic. Anyone using a Leica SF 24 D with the X1?

;)

Sorry it's off topic, but may I know what channel and group you use on Nikon SB600 to let X1 fire it in studio mode?

Thank you.

All that is needed is a black dog who has had his dinner!

The first is an indulgence, I couldn't resist sharing this one taken the old fashioned way......no flash but the Nokton 40 f1.4

The one below is the X1 with SF20 in M mode bounced with the SC17. I have to mention that the Nikon SC17 mounted on the X1 extends forward of the camera awkwardly, so that you really have to wrestle the cord away from the lens while shooting. Once you get the hang of that, it works well. Here I only cropped and almost no level tweaking.

Happy Flashing!

David

Gensu: Thanks for posting this for us!

I like the richness of the last one on the wood of the guitar best save for the reflection of the flash. So if it were me, I would do the bounce again (as in #1) but try for more intensity at the same time avoiding any reflection of the flash on the wood (as seen in #3).
