Hi All

This is what I've gotten from the test battery that Michael Bass refurbished for me [thank you Michael]

I'm pleased !

After the 1st charge, the display showed only 1/4 charge after 13 shots, I was a little worried.

But, the DMR kept going until a little over 300 shots ! About 1/4 of those shots were just firing the thing off to see what it would do.

On the 2nd charge, it took 81 shots to get the battery to drop to that 1/4 full level, but again, the DMR kept going for over 100 additional shots.I'm now on photo 82 with the 3rd charge, and the display is still showing full !

That's all I had time for, looking forward to seeing more good results

All of these were using auto wind, preview, some play back a few times, and shooting mostly RAW with a few jpegs thrown in for good measure.

Charging times were 'normal', about 1 1/2 to 2 hours.

YMMV

Alright folks, the moment you've been waiting for! Michael, of Michael Bass Designs, is ready to take orders for rebuilding your DMR batteries! In order to get going, he needs a firm number of rebuild orders.

Please contact him at michaelbass@charter.net with your order.

COST will be $100, including shipping in US. Other destinations will need to be figured out.

Please spread the word to other DMR users who might be interested in this great opportunity! Testing is still being done on external power supplies for the DMR, and I will let you know as soon as we have more news on that!

For now though, if you have batteries to rebuild, please contact Michael at the previously mentioned email address and start your order! Batteries will be built in the order that orders are received (naturally).

Sincerely pleased,

Troy Freund

Hello every One,

I had opened DMR battery for curiosity and to see whether i will be able to fix it myself. I then send it to Michael bass who placed the new battery inside the plastic mold and is on its way back to me in very short time. WOW!! what a turn around time!!! Excellent customer service!!!. I am now life long customer of M.Bass for my DMR batteries and price is better then what one expect if it is send to Germany to refurbish from USA. Thank you to Troy for directing me to Michael Bass.

Just an update:

Testing is wrapping up on the different external battery pack solutions; more info will come soon.

Internal DMR Battery Pack Re-Builds (new cells) are moving along, normally with a 1 day turn around on the Re-Build. There are currently 18 sets of cells remaining. After this batch, orders will be taken to see if additional cells can be ordered from the manufacturer and at what cost.

Just wanted to "bump" this thread, as us DMR owners are a small pop and I really want all of 'em to be aware of this--there IS a solution for DMR battery rebuilds and it's in CT! Please check out Michael's website and the neat solutions he's come up with for us!

Michael has re-celled 2 batteries for me so far and they are both working great !

My remaining 2 batteries are going to him today for same procedure.

He still has some new cells, and can still do it for the original price, which includes postage !

Testing is finished for several of the external battery packs, cables, chargers, and AC power supplies being used to power these DMR units. Additional writeups will be on my site very soon: Michael Bass Designs (look for the Leica section link).

I am looking for one last tester who has any of the Quantum Turbo batteries and one or more of the DMR units. From the photogs who have multiple DMR units or multiple cameras, it seems there are variances between units, and while one external battery pack and cable set will work fine with one set, differences are seen from unit to another!

This tester will verify the shot count using the different Quantum cables I am making, as well as the shot counts for the Extended Power Li-Polymer Battery Pack and the AA Emergency Battery Pack.

In return for the testing, and accurate shot count reporting, the tester will be able to purchase any of the finished items at a reduced cost if they wish.

Please contact me: at michaelbass@charter.net (USA residents preferred)

There are still about 15 sets of the cells available for the internal DMR battery pack Re-Builds. It doesn't appear that any more cells will be ordered in the near future due to minimum ordering quantities needed.

Questions, or suggestions, please ask!

I've had 4 batteries rebuilt by Michael and they all work just

fine; getting ''about'' 150 shots RAW per battery [well, I haven't had

chance to run out the very last one, but it seems ok so far]

I've tested Michael's SLA battery cables, his Li-Poly battery cables, his AC

power unit, and Tekkeon power cables.

I give a thumbs up to all of them.

I was not able to test the life of each unit so that's to be determined.

The Tekkeon is rated [i believe] for -4 F, which is probably lower than the

internals can go. No chance to try that either, but that's ok :)

None of these units would fire the DMR at it's max rated 9 shot burst, only

getting 3 - 4 shots at best, until I switched R8 bodies.

On a whim to see if my older R8 would even work with the DMR, I found it not

only worked, but it would shoot those 9 shot bursts with the external setups

with no trouble ! The first R8 worked fine otherwise, except for the burst

issue.

Also, Michael is a good guy to work with and talk to, very accommodating,

and patient too. I'm pretty 'tech limited' so I needed a lot of instruction

:)

1) We are down to the last 10 Re-Builds for the DMR battery packs. It could be a long time before more cells can be ordered.

2) One of the original testers (Gene D.) just got a Quantum Turbo, and has agreed to be the final tester to verify the different cable sets, and hopefully get a comparative shot count. His DMR unit has already passed the 9 shot burst test (thanks Gary P), so as soon as I reconfigure all the test cables and test procedures, I will get the setup off to Gene and report the results as soon as possible.

In the meantime, much of the information is already on my site in the Leica DMR sub-section, or ask if you have other questions, or suggestions.

I shot over 180 shots over the weekend on just one of Michael's rebuilds with temps in the teens and low twenties. I used auto wind on some, manual wind on some, 5 sec preview, 19.4 mb RAW for each shot. This was over 2 'sessions': 2 1/2 hours for first outing, and 3 hours for the 2nd outing.

Not too bad :)

Battery Pack Updates

1) DMR Re-Builds: Only 3 sets of cells left. It is unlikely any more cells will be ordered after these last 3 sets.

2) External Battery Packs: Forum member Gene is helping with the final shot count and cable type comparison (length and wire guage). Results to be posted as soon as he is finished for these listed external power supplies:

  • SLA (Sealed Lead Acid - easily available, but bulky, a bit heavy; least costly)
  • Li-Polymer Hi Capacity (highest power to weight ratio, usually most costly)
  • Quantum Turbo (connection cable to Quantum Turbo line of battery packs)
  • Tekkeon All Power (MP3450i and connection cables)
  • DigiPower DPS-9000 (currently available, easy to use, slightly more capacity than internal pack)
  • AA Power Packs (disposable or rechargeable)

3) Those photogs already using the DigiPower DPS-9000 under-camera mountable battery pack and the Tekkeon MP4550i all have reported favorable results.

Please read through the linked information before asking questions.
