Who designed and manufactured the Leica X1 box?

Times have changed. Before, cardboard boxes were designed to be straight-forward and utilitarian. Not any more. Many of us were first introduced to ergonomically designed boxes by Apple computers. Now Leica has upped the ante with the Leica X1 box. Sure, it is not made from hardwood with dovetail joinery but, for a cardboard box, it has got to be the best packaging I've ever seen. There have been a few discussions marveling about this little wonder but I have been thinking; who designed and manufactured the Leica X1 cardboard box? Does anybody know?

As nice as the box is, it contributes to the high price for the camera. Maybe USD +100.

No chance of that. You can get a quantity of those boxes from China for less than five U.S. dollars each.

They could have used a much simpler box, imho it will have nothing to do with resale value. I do think it's a nice experience, and I doubt it adds $100 to the price, it may cost them $5 a box instead of 10 cents though.

Yes, it's great when opening. Now my box has been collecting dust...

I wish the design effort and manufacturing cost should have placed into the camera itself. Then, give me a simple cardboard box (like those for mobile phone).

Well, I guess if I had the choice between the box or exchanging the plastic skin for leather, I would take the leather, or even real vulcanite.

O.K., as far as the price of the box goes, I should be able to answer this part of the equation fairly accurately as I am making my own custom designed box for my own business. Though not quite as complicated as the X1 box, it will be special indeed. I will let everyone know what the cost is once I get an invoice. Now as far as the opening question goes, does anyone know who designed and manufactured the Leica X1 box?!!!!!!!!

I do not know who manufactured the box, but I have to say that I wanted to return the camera when I saw the box. I felt like an environmental criminal purchasing a camera with such extravagantly wasteful packaging. I guess that saving the planet, trees and the environment are not high on the list at Leica. Apple products also have the mystique of exclusivity, luxury, and a higher price-point relative to their competitors, yet Apple prides itself on minimalistic packaging. Leica could do well to follow Apple's lead, IMO.

It's a BOX for "garfields" sake, not a declaration of war!

Think of all the film you will not use. All the chemicals not needed. No waste of paper for prints of nothing. Think happy thoughts as the camera covering is artificial and did not require skinning an animal. Feel better. If you just cannot stand the thought of being an environmental criminal, then please surrender your camera and your box to me and I will take on your burden of guilt.

I have to concur with the above comments. Though the box isn't biodegradeable, it is simply cardboard. It is paper that can be easily recycled. Now whether or not you are brave enough to throw your box away in the proper recycling barrel is up to you. I for one, am not. I like my box. In addition, if your city ordinances truly do have a program for recycling, then your cardboard box poses little environmental impact. Let me ask you this; when was the last time you bought a car?
