oysterboy Posted August 20, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 20, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Dear all, I am in the market for a used M8 Aside from the "common sense" things on how to go about it, general shape of the camera, reputation of the dealer etc i have two questions, -What is a fair price to pay for an M8 in very good condition with boxes, manuals etc..? -What are some of the "hidden" precautions i have to have for someone who is new to this? Many thanks!
Advertisement Posted August 20, 2010 Posted August 20, 2010 Hi oysterboy, Take a look here Buying my first M8. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Jeff S Posted August 21, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 21, 2010 Keep in mind that there is an M8, an upgraded M8 (may have some or all upgrades) and the M8.2. Prices here are fairly representative...Used M Digital Cameras - Dale Photo & Digital You should also check prices in the buy/sell section of this forum, and of course many other dealers. Prices vary by dealer and location, so it's worth making calls. If you've never used an M, or a rangefinder, my suggestion is to go slowly, get the body and one lens, and go through a reputable dealer (some warranty preferred). Going through a dealer is suggested in case you don't get along with the camera and/or if there are any problems. If it's an older camera, ask if it has been serviced by Leica at some point. Bert N Posted August 21, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 21, 2010 You should review this thread:http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/99237-what-test-used-m8.html In terms of price, it all depends on cosmetic quality and usage (# of actuations) but the range is typically between $2100 - $2800. wilfredo Posted August 26, 2010 Share #4 Posted August 26, 2010 Good luck on your purchase. E-bay is a good option if you are not a newbie to E-bay. I have remained a loyal fan of the M8 even after the introduction of the M9.
johnwolf Posted August 29, 2010 Share #5 Posted August 29, 2010 I just received Tamarkin's newsletter, in which they are offering $250 off any M8 through Sept. 10. They have quite a few and offer a 3-month warranty on them. They're a pretty good outfit. John
zipper Posted August 29, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 29, 2010 a early boxed and mint M8 might with a v. low shutter count might not always be the best bet. It may still have the known teathing probs. Whatever you do though, any remaining Leica or a cast iron shop guarantee is a highly recommended.
ramosa Posted August 31, 2010 Share #7 Posted August 31, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) prices vary, of course. you may want to buy one from a reputable dealer, used, of course, but with a warranty. that way, you'll have some protection from getting one that doesn't function well. (that said, i haven't had problems with mine, which i purchased new almost three years ago.)
