About to buy an X1

Thanks for your suggestion, lazarus. I'll have to give it a try. I wear progressive lenses and usually find manual focussing very difficult, however if I'm going to photograph a static subject/scene then it could work out to be just fine.I appreciate your suggestion very much!

 

Ghosthunter, I have not the slightest doubt that you'd do absolutely wonderfully with this camera if you decide to go this route.

Right. So I waited for Photokina and am now a little more confused with this news of Fuji - but I don't think I can wait that far ahead. The X1 is pricy and seeming pricier now that the Fuji is out of the bag.

 

Any prospective X1 buyers going to continue and go for it or are you guys holding out for the Fuji?

I'm holding out only because for the next 2 weeks I'll be shopping my "old" gear: (Nikon D300s, Nikkor 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6). Sometime around October 3-4 I'm hoping to order my new X1 (silver or black, TBD) from one of many reputable dealers (again, TBD).

 

Waiting for the Fuji X100 is not on my radar.

There is no harm in waiting till Mar 2011 to see how the new Fuji is. You have waited long enough already. Just be aware that by Mar 2011 someone may announce another new camera that will claim to trump both the Fuji and X1.

or the x100 may be "vaporware" everyone seems to be forgetting that Fuji isn't demonstrating a working prototype of the x100 at p'kina

Confidence would increase if there was a working model of the X100 at the show. Some reports say that there is not such a working model.

it is much easier to promise the sun/moon/and the stars to sell for a pittance without having a working prototype..... who knows really what the specs and look will actually be and at what price? and what production delays may occur ?

lazarus, you have waited long enough for an X1. Perhaps you don't need such a camera! For me, three hours in Bath today (160 pictures) convinced me just how versatile and useful the X1 camera is for 'walk-around' or travel photography. Discreet and efficient; superb IQ. Just go for it!

i have one! and shot about 1000 frames and i agree....im just trying to help others make their decision....

perhaps they were just concerned it would be stolen as apple's iphone 4 prototype was before it was launched. or maybe that was just viral marketing..

The rangefinder was a brilliant invention which, when combined with a small format camera, drove an industry for many years. The concept of combining an optical and electronic viewfinder has the potential to drive this segment of the camera market for years to come. The execution of this concept will evolve and other companies will try to improve upon this approach. Simulated projected rangefinders, DSLR type autofocus points, more visible/accurate frame lines at all distances are all in the future. Kudos to Fuji for putting a real viewfinder back into our future. Leica will respond in short order because this new concept will negatively impact their sales. The X2, M10 and other advanced amateur/pro cameras will all benefit from what Fuji has introduced. I can wait to see how this unfolds.

Hmmm, so they have the hit of the show and they don't bother making it... doesn't seem likely. Isn't this what companies want to happen to show them that they had a great idea and should follow through with it. This is Fuji, not some start-up looking for investors.

whether it's Fuji or a start-up they all have to make a profit and if the proposed feature set doesn't allow them to make that camera and sell it at a profit- a) either it doesn't get made or the features get changed

Yup, look at the prototype X1 and the final one we got. I am fine with it but many are complaining. The same may hold true for the X100.

 

Also, the VF apparently is quite small. May not be all that comfortable, not to mention all that clutter in the already small finder.

 

I do not use VF in a compact, but know it imperative for many. Compared to the X1's giant external optional VF, wouldnt the teeny X100 VF be uncomfortable? Just my thoughts, I am no expert in VFs.

 

I only use the large VF in my Nikon. Big and clear, even so still uncomfortable with many shots.

Well I had the X100 in my hand. A prototype, nothing more not working yet.

I had also the X1 in my hand, with VF. You could put in your own SD card make photos and look at home what the camera can do and what not.

 

What Leica have in their M8/M9 they can put in a X2 and if they want also a F=2,0 lens. But I am afraid not for Eur. 1000,-

 

In the mean time they can improve the X1 firmware. After 6 months IF the X100 is there I am sure the plans for the X2 will be there.
