It is not a replacement for either of my cameras, but I've been wanting to try it for an extended period of time since it came out. My wife has a gh1 and I later got the E-p2 for myself before getting the x1. X1 my favorite but I really do like the E-P2. I think the inbody stabilization is great, and the EVF of the E-P2 is very good too. +1 on the Pens After racking my brain for several months as to whether to get the X1 or something else, I noticed (here in the UK) sellouts on the discontinued E-P1, and got one last week with 17mm f2.8 with optical finder for £380 where they were selling a few weeks ago for well over £600. So far I am very pleased with the IQ and operation and it really suits me, and I've saved a huge bundle of money so won't be getting an X1 now. The other advantage for me is that when I get the lens adapter I can use all my Zuiko 4/3 lenses for occasional use, though I have a feeling the 17mm will be staying on most of the time as its a great combination. But just because its been discontinued doesn't mean its useless - who would have thought many of us would still be raving about the Digilux 2 years after it left the shops. Most people need the newest and most technically advanced equipment available in the mistaken impression that it will make them take better photographs, which is rarely the case. Plus, I still find the GF1 to have faster AF than the Pens (even with their update). So, for the Pens, been there, done that... needed to try something different. jsrockit Posted August 23, 2010 Share #71 Posted August 23, 2010 Ok, been using the GF1 for the last two days and I have to admit something... the AF isn't as fast as I remember it to be. I'm using the 20mm lens and apparently, the zoom is faster. That said, the GF1's 20mm lens focuses fast if you keep focusing on things that are only a few inches to feet apart. However, focus on something up close and then 10 feet away and it is slow. That is where I see the big difference between an DSLR and the GF1. Everything else that is said about the camera is true as well. Its high ISO isn't that good and the shutter is noisy, but the IQ from the 20mm is very nice (and nice bokeh) and the LCD is great. If the X1 didn't exist... I'd be cool with this as my only bring everywhere camera. Overall, it is a nice camera for the money. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

First, you can hardly find a replacement to a great camera like the D700 to be honest. Second, there're things you have to shoot with a DSLR, e.g. moving cars. The X1 is great but I do miss the fast AF on my D700, when I need it. If you can, keep the D700 and get a X1. That'll be perfect! That's what I'm saving for now. To get the D700 back. Because I'm a die-hard rangefinder user... it's a comfort thing for me (having used an M6 and Contax G for so many years). I tried to say to myself that I wanted the best image making machine I could afford... so I tried the D700 (having sold my original M8 to afford it). The photos look technically great, but I was no longer inspired and didn't feel right using it (and my images changed for the worse). Once I got the M8.2 and sold the D700, the inspired feeling came back and my photos got better. Sure, this is my own opinion and based on my silly little idiosyncrasies... but I'd rather have the most comfortable tool than the best tool. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...
mrdawkins Posted August 25, 2010 Share #76 Posted August 25, 2010 I would go for the X1 without hesitation; in fact I am about to get one myself after having been very dissapointed with loads of so called great compacts: GF1, PEN EP-1, GRDIII, G11. Don't get me wrong they all produce good files, but the Leica experience goes beyond anything that is easily explainable. DSLRs are great when you have the time to lug them around, but they are just not practical for general use (IMO) And of course the other issues is that when you do finally buy a Leica it is then very hard to go back.
