It's got progressively worse since I bought it and now its pretty much impossible to move. Are there any known fixes to this problem? or am I just going to have to send it to Leica? Thanks. Nicoleica Posted August 10, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 10, 2010 I never had any problems with my M8. Mine actually had a switch that was perfect, not too loose, and not too stiff. However, I did have a similar problem with my F3. The power switch became so stiff that I was almost afraid to use it. Before sending it off for repair, I decided to risk cleaning around the switch area with some lens cleaner solution. Working on the theory that if it was gentle enough to clean lenses, it was unlikely to eat my camera. (The particular brand that I used was T'nB in this case. It came as a part of a cleaning kit that I had bought.) I let the solution seep under the switch (Just a few drops.) and waited a short while. Whatever gunk was causing the switch to stick was dissolved/rinsed away, and the switch now functions as good as new. If your camera is out of warrantee, itt might be worth trying this before sending your camera to Solms. Link to post Share on other sites More sharing options...

I know that you wrote that with a smile Jaap, but the lens cleaner is a mild solvent that evaporates cleanly. WD40 tends to leave an oily residue that I didn't want in my camera. Mine went rather stiff for some time and even the release button didn't move properly, i.e. I couldn't find the point to save the exposure measurements precisely but released the shutter often when I didn't want to. Perhaps this was caused by dust, sand and/or sweat on the switch. After I applied some dry cleaning and some exercizing the switch without a battery, it was well again like new. I wrapped a length of unwaxed dental floss around in the gap under the switch and pulled it back out. Got whatever out was under there and solved the problem. Same on my power switch caused by water infiltration witch set off some oxidation in the switch. (a few snowflakes had melted on and around the switch) Also had bad battery life and strange behaving release moments. Leica AG would not repair it, (was even still under warranty) unless I payed €300 just to get an estimate of the total repair bill. So, I fixed it myself — disassembling the M8, cleaning the switch and reassembling — (thanks to marknorton's threat http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m8-forum/21331-anatomy-leica-m8.html) and now, one year later, still works fine.
