Frontfocus, return or fix?

Hi,

To go with my M9 I bought a used mint, boxed 75mm Summicron APO ASPH f2 from an eBay dealer in Germany. Excellent communications and arrived 3 days later. However it front focuses, and I need to decide what to do, return it or get it adjusted?

I am going away in 4 weeks on a trip (which includes my sister in law's wedding), and I want to take a 75 cron with me, so its partly driven by this requirement.

The M9 focuses fine with the 35 summilux, but I couldn't get a sharp shot with the 75 cron, so tested it this evening. This is wide open and I'm focusing on the 7cm mark. I repeated the test 5 times.:(

So should I see if Leica can get the lens adjusted for me (and hope to get it back by Sept 3rd) or return the lens and try and source another?

I read the thread on the 90mm APO ASPH, is there a similar problem with 75s or is it just bad luck and an easy fix?

There don't seem to be many of these in stock in the UK new either...

I would send it in for adjustment. You will probably also be unable to find correct focus on infinity where the (the lack of) tolerance is more outspoken than near focus.

Leica should be able to adjust the lens to the standard focus, and provided the camera is actually also in focus (by the standard and not just happen work well with the 35mm), it will fit when you get it back.

I would send it off and e-mail Leica Customer Service that it's on its way and the urgency of getting it back in time for the travel. Their email is cs@leica-camera.com

I would say fix, and I would use one of UK's well-known repair persons to do it. Maybe you can get the seller to pay the repair for you.

can anyone suggest a UK repair person? I'm based in London, so that would be preferable.

Thanks

My suggestion is that you have Solms adjust it for you as soon as you can reasonably spare it. The cost would be trivial in comparison to the value of the lens.

In your shoes I would immediately be speaking with Customer Service directly. Mine was adjusted to perfection and for free when I paid for having my M8 upgraded. I never saw any problem with it BEFORE they adjusted it

It's perfect on my M9 now also.

thanks, I've been on the phone this morning. As I need the lens back by the end of the month for a wedding, I've found a new one in stock in the UK and the dealer in Germany will take back the front focussing one. Fingers crossed!

Thanks

Speak to Malcolm Taylor about the problem. I have had great satisfaction with his lens servicing [01568 770 542].

thanks, I did. very helpful chap. He advised sending it to Solms as its a floating element design. He did say he could do 6 bit coding much faster than the 4-6 weeks though...
