Roehunter Posted August 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted August 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I bought a demo Leica M8.2 and now my new Summarit 35 mm has arrived. I aligned the red dots and push it in but when I try to turn it just moves some mm and does not snap into place. What's wrong?

Nicoleica Posted August 3, 2010 Share #2 Posted August 3, 2010 Hi. Sometimes a new camera and lens can have quite tight tolerances, and the fit may be quite tight at first. You may have to turn it quite firmly to reach the locking position. However, your statement that the lens only moves a few mm leads me to ask the following question. Please excuse me for asking this, but are you turning the lens the correct way? (I know it's a silly question, but some cameras mount in different directions, and if you are used to one of those, it is possible. Again, my apologies for asking, but it is with good intentions.) jaapv Posted August 3, 2010 Share #3 Posted August 3, 2010 Try another lens in the shop. The most common cause for this problem is that the bajonet lug of the lens has received a whack and is bent. Even if it is new - a butterfingered salesman may have dropped it whilst showing it to a customer. Edit - I just saw the eminently sensible suggestion by Nicole - that would be an explanation. It's ok to ask but I turn the lens correct way (right). It moves a few mm and then its feels like something is blocking. I have not taking a single pitcture with my Leica yet due to delivery time for the lens and now this happens....

I can't try another lens because there is no Leica shop around here, I have to travel at least 500 km. I bought the lens from a webshop.
Nicoleica Posted August 3, 2010 Share #6 Posted August 3, 2010 Hi again. When you turn the lens, does it just feel stiff, or is the a definite 'stop' to the movement? If it's only a very stiff movement, then turning further should be OK as some lens/camera combinations can be quite tight. (I seem to recall a few people mentioning that the M8.2 is quite stiff when new.) Obviously this should all be within reason. You should find that it will ease after a few mount/dismount actions. Otherwise, as Jaap says, the lens lugs/flanges may have been damaged somehow. You should be able to see any serious damage by a visual examination. aesop Posted August 3, 2010 Share #7 Posted August 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) ...Roehunter, Leica's QC cannot be that poor, particularly for a simple mechanical coupling such as this. For now, I recommend you go away for ~1 hour, have a coffee (or something) and then come back for another try (the sequencing is really important). When you return, be a bit more persuasive with the twisting action. Then let us know the outcome. And welcome to the forum.

It moves quite easy about five mm and then it's dead stop. Have not used all my muscle power because I'm afraid to break something. I can't see any damages on the lens. Maybe I should try to put on some oil on the lens flanges?
jaapv Posted August 3, 2010 Share #9 Posted August 3, 2010 No - don't do that The lens mount is lubricated by a very thin layer of vaseline. Oil will smear that off. You can use some firmness on the lens, but it should mount smoothly. You wouldn't see a bent flange lug, hence my suggestion of trying any other Leica lens in the shop. It is not very likely that the camera bajonet flange is at fault. One more idea. You are not inadvertently blocking the frameline lever with your finger? Roehunter Posted August 3, 2010 Author Share #10 Posted August 3, 2010 I did it. I got angry and used a lot more strenght and it snapped into place. Leica should write this in their instructions, use all your muscle strenght to mount your lens. If you are a woman you maybe need a man to help you Thanks for your support! Glad to hear it worked out - now go and shoot something.

I'm glad to hear that it was just a bit stiff, and that your lens and camera are now mated together. You should find that it will ease a bit with use, but they are intended to be a tight fit. Never knowing quite how strong others are, it can be a bit scary to just say 'twist harder', although in my case that's not a problem as I have about the combined strength of 3 dormice. I wish you lots of pleasure with your new camera, and I'm sure that we all look forward to seeing some of your photographs in the future.

Sounds like my Voigtlander 15mm! My 35 summicron IV however is very smooth, I can take it off/put it on with 3 fingers.
cbretteville Posted August 6, 2010 Share #14 Posted August 6, 2010 My M8 was very, very stiff when I first got it, it has loosened over time and now feels like my M3 and M6. Carl

menos I M6 Posted August 7, 2010 Share #18 Posted August 7, 2010 After I used a diamond file on one of the lens flange it's much smoother but I hope mine also loosen a bit more over time. Good, you did it in the end! One word on advice though for any lens mounting/ unmounting, stiff or smooth - ALWAYS mount and unmount the lens only on the designated lens base (the part of the lens with the red dot attached and the bayonet mount fixed to)! Even with lenses, where this ring is seemingly hard to reach due to a compact build - lenses don't like, to get repeatedly twisted to their focus mounts, resulting in a faster wear, needing adjustment earlier in life. My M8.2 mount is much tighter than with my M6 and M7. I had a lens coded in Solms, which came back and was almost impossible to mount on the M8.2 (I suppose very similar to your Summarit) - after a few mounts/ unmounts, it does work smoothly now. None of my lenses do have any play in the mount on the M8.2, whereas especially the "heavy to focus lenses" like the 90 Cron do have a slight (annoying) twist play on the M7 and more so on the M6. I very much prefer the tight fit on the M8.2 - feels much more solid with focussing precisely.
