Fotomiguel Posted July 10, 2011 Author Share #41 Posted July 10, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) The 35 summilux is an incredible lens. I've had the opotunity to see the results very close. But anyway no enough money. This post is from last year. Now I'm the owner of a wonderful second hand 35mm sumicron f2. Like new! I'm really happy with it, even when is not the magic summilux. I don't use the lens frecuently but when I use it, it's just perfect. I have been using the latest version asph and last week I bought a Summicron 35 v.IV, which besides being much smaller and lighter, seems to be very good... almost as good as the asph. MarkP Posted July 10, 2011 Share #44 Posted July 10, 2011 Hi, I'm not sure whether you saw the threads I started about this lens? The first one I had was a dud so I sent it back. The second one seems about right BUT there are issues with it that I think people might want to be aware of before paying for one. My testing showed, like all the more detailed tests I have seen, that focus shift is so minimal as to be largely unimportant. However I did find that there are strange focus effects which mean, in short, that particularly at medium to medium far distances, the centre of the field of view is a little OOF whilst the rest of it is sharp - and if you pull focus a touch closer than the RF suggests, the centre of the frame become very sharp but the the rest goes a little OOF. This effect is worst at F2.8 through 5.6 and is extremely hard to describe because there appear to be shifts in DOF too and these are non-linear across the FOV. Something very complex is going on which I am not enough of an optical expert to analyse but I do know that I personally do not quite trust the lens yet: in practice these effects seem usually not to matter very much BUT I am just off on a shooting trip and I am sufficiently suspicious to be taking my 28 cron too. The reason I bought the 35 lux was that I imagined my perfect travel kit would be 18mm, 35mm and 90mm with the 35 lux doubling up as the 'fast' lens. My current 'fast lenses' are 50 lux and nocti, both slightly too long for my taste and a bit big for my ideal travel kit. But as it is, my mistrust means that until the 35 lux has had a really good workout on this trip (I will shoot a lot and check all frames at 100% for the first day or two) I won't use it for anything really important and will be taking the 50 lux and 28 cron along too. Admittedly this sounds picky but hey, I print large and I only pay a lot for lenses because I am picky. If you want to see examples of what I found, and just how odd it is, please see http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/132018-35-lux-m-m9-5.html#post1389654 I hope this helps. Tim Very interesting. I have just sent mine back to Leica for EXACTLY this problem which I've only recently appreciated. I'll post regarding the outcome when the lens comes back. Mark. IkarusJohn Posted July 10, 2011 Share #47 Posted July 10, 2011 Advertisement (gone after registration) You guys worry me. I have been considering trading my Summicron 35 Asph for the Summilux 35 Asph FLE - I have one on order. It sounds, though, as if there are still problems with it, even though the focus shift issue of earlier versions have been addressed. My Summicron is a perfect little lens, but I would like the extra stop, and to be able to use the same filters as for my 50 Lux and 28 Cron. However, stories of rattling aperture blades and centre focusing issues have given me pause for thought. Are these significant issues? or is it just a few exceptional issues - I haven't had a cracked sensor, my sensor seems to have remained clean after 8 months of use, and my SD cards work perfectly. Cheers John
Fotomiguel Posted July 11, 2011 Author Share #48 Posted July 11, 2011 The summilux is in a superior level. One more extra stop is not the only advantage. Color rendition is amazing. The best lens I've seen. If I had the money, I would do it.

If I had the money, I would do it. I fully agree with your comments, and otherwise the lens is fantastic. In particular, for me it's the perfect one-lens kit with my M9. Nevertheless, this specific problem with central focus at mid distance and mid f-stop is real at least in these two individual lenses. Mark
wattsy Posted July 11, 2011 Share #50 Posted July 11, 2011 It's most probably an inherent characteristic of the lens - one of the small compromises involved in designing and building such a fine optic. I doubt that Solms will be able to do anything to 'fix' it.
MarkP Posted July 11, 2011 Share #51 Posted July 11, 2011 But interesting that there have been so few comments about this, particularly if it is a problem which proves to be inherent design characteristic. Hopefully it's something straightforward and fixed with an adjustment. Mark

wattsy Posted August 5, 2011 Share #54 Posted August 5, 2011 But interesting that there have been so few comments about this, particularly if it is a problem which proves to be inherent design characteristic. I think it is inherent and a necessary compromise. There is an odd curvature of the field at longer distances that necessitates careful (and considered) focussing. For instance, the lens is quite unforgiving if you are in the lazy habit (I sometimes am) of just racking the lens to infinity when the main subject is 100 yards away (or more). Have Solms come back to you with any comments on this matter? I still think it is a sensational lens.

It has gone off with my M9 and most of my lenses for calibration. Fortunately my dealer, and then Leica, have loaned me an M9 to use with my remaining lenses.
