Hello everyone,

I got a used Leitz Summilux-M 35mm 1.4, the S. # 3474914, without box, paper, and proper front cap. "LENS MADE IN GERMANY" on the barrel. Of course, very very good condition.

First of all, we could not found any proper UV filter for her (I got at local biggest camera store, we have tried through out the store even the basement). Second, we could not found any lens cap for her neither. It seams between 39mm to 40.50mm.

Can anyone kindly give me some advise. Thanks lot.

You need a Series 7 filter for the lens. Sadly you will need the hood also to secure the filter since the lens itself has no filter thread. You will need to do a good search on the bay or at local Leica shops to find the hood which have part number 12 504.

You can read about this lens here: LEICA SUMMILUX 35mm f/1.4 (1961-1995)

It is a good lens, with the classic "Leica Glow" on f 1.4, some copies might not work on M8/M9 but works fine on Film Ms. Good luck.

Edit: Did a quick search on *-Bay and found 5 different sellers of the hood. Just search Leica 12504 and you will find them. A quick warning though, they are not cheap.

Dear Matlep,

Thank you so much for the info. Fortunately, I do have the lens hood coming with the lens (save money there already). I have tested the lens on my M9, and it works perfectly, and pictures are fantastic.

One more question though, I have searched on ebay and found a "Hoya Series VII UV Drop-in filter" see link ( Hoya Series VII (7) UV (0) Filter New in Box - eBay (item 130407959832 end time Aug-06-10 14:09:34 PDT)). Is this the filter that I should go for protecting the lens? Of course, I will also email to the seller for the same question.

Thanks again.

John

Sounds great! And yes, that is the correct filter.

Yes, that's the correct filter. It's useful to know that a standard Leica E49 screw in filter will also fit into the hood if you mount it between the two sections of the hood with the thread of the filter facing away from the lens. Although never intended to be used this way it offers an alternative solution for some difficult to find Series 7 filters.

This is correct. But most regular screw-thread 49mm filters have filter rims too deep to fit into the available space, i.e. you won't be able to screw the hood front back in place. B+W however, and probably some other manufactures, have slim-line filters (without the front thread) that will work fine.

Regular (i.e. non slim) E49 B+W F-Pro filters fit just fine as long as the thread is facing outwards.

Yes, B+W did revise their mountings some years ago, with slimmer rims. Regular "Leica" filters however (whoever does make them) are too deep.

I've just tried a Leica E49 UV/IR filter in the hood and it fits fine if the threads face away from the lens. A B+W Digital Pro UV/IR will just about fit either way. With the B+W thread facing out the filter is loose but held in the hood. With the threads facing the lens the hood will only screw together by just over a quarter of a turn.

I don't know for sure if the UV/IR Leica filter mounts are identical to the non UV/IR ones, but I think they are.

My own specimen could take an Olympus OM 49mm filter -- these have extremely thin rims -- but no other brand I could lay my hands on was useable (except true Series VII ones, of course). Maybe things have changed.

But remember, it is not just a question of getting the threads to grip. You will also want to be able to turn the hood front enough to prevent it and the filter from falling off accidentally.

My Oly filters also fit ok, but the hood is not really effective with a filter, a better solution is here.

Thanks all,

I have ordered the filter through ebay, shall receive it in next week.

Basically, just want to have the filter to protect the lens glass. By the way, I am really happy with the lens performance, and quite enjoy it over my new Lux 50mm.

Good luck everyone.
