The tiger

His vision, from the constantly passing bars, has grown so weary that it cannot hold anything else. It seems to him there are a thousand of them; and behind the bars, no world...

As he paces in cramped circles, over and over, the movement of his powerful soft strides is like a ritual dance around a center in which a mighty will stands paralyzed. Only at times, the curtain of the pupils lifts, quietly. An image enters in, rushes down through the tensed, arrested muscles, plunges into the heart, and is gone...

Don't you just hate zoos?

Your contrast is a bit too much perhaps, but the story is quite powerful. This brings to mind Mike's images from the African bush. How happy and fulfilled those guys look. No wonder.

I agree with Ece on all counts. A great picture and narrative of a sad occurance in zoos that contain animals in tight quarters. The picture is a tad bit too contrasty for me.

I don't like zoos. I personally would prefer visiting a prison, where people are held captive for having committed crimes...

However, the boys came home on their last day of school with tickets in their report card and, obviously, they wanted to go...

I tried to explain the sadness of the whole situation, but for now, being 6 years old, they understand only so much...

As for the high contrast, I meant to achieve that... I thought it would have added drama.

Here is a lower contrast version of the same shot.

Thanks for your feedback, Ece and Paul. I appreciate.

Good picture, IMO. Personally I like the lower contrast a bit better.

As zoos go, the Toronto Zoo is probably as good as it gets. Lots and lots of space, good distance from the public etc. There are pros and cons, but I am in balance against them.

#2 is much better. I too find it difficult to tolerate zoos. With the decimation of tigers so that their penises can be used in medicines, even though viagra actually works, zoos might soon be the last place to find tigers.
