Julian Thompson Posted August 5, 2010 Author Share #21 Posted August 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Well it's done. Composition wise I'm pleased with what I got - couple of really nice ones in there with just the right amount of space around, in my opinion. Where I cocked it up massively was that I couldn't get any 800 or 1600 film, so I ended up in an evening 'do' situation with 400 speed film only!! This pushed me into stupid shutter speeds and it has, frankly, spoiled a fair few shots - the one below included really but I was so chuffed with the positioning that this is the one I'm picking as my favourite. It's not a great photo I don't think, but as my first go (with too slow film) I don't think it's a bad effort? Welcome, dear visitor! Julian Thompson Posted August 5, 2010 Author Share #22 Posted August 5, 2010 PS - if someone can tell me the best technique to remove that ghosting around the wedding dress then I'd be grateful :-))
zlatkob Posted August 5, 2010 Share #23 Posted August 5, 2010 It's a lovely photo. I would leave the ghosting around the wedding dress just the way it is.
bill Posted August 5, 2010 Share #24 Posted August 5, 2010 It's a lovely photo. I would leave the ghosting around the wedding dress just the way it is. I couldn't agree more (don't faint!) Regards, Bill
ndjambrose Posted August 5, 2010 Share #25 Posted August 5, 2010 It's a tremendous composition and the timing is perfect. Nice job. Not much you can do about the motion blur (although if you're in that situation again it's best to shoot the correct speed and underexpose because you can correct for the latter, but not the former). It will make a nice print, I think. If you're concerned about the ghosting then consider printing it soft and making the image even more blurred - the effect would look rather nice. Rolo Posted August 5, 2010 Share #26 Posted August 5, 2010 Nice image, Julian. Hope you enjoyed your new M7 A-la-C. Did it suit the application ? Constrained to 400 iso, you need a little light support from somewhere. Welcome, dear visitor! Julian Thompson Posted August 5, 2010 Author Share #27 Posted August 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Nice one Gary !!! Thing is - how to do that ? Or if you tell me, will you have to kill me? M7 is simply brilliant. I just love it - the 0.85 finder is perfect in low light like that and the meter auto setting is so helpful when you're shooting quickly and constantly turning into and away from the lighting. I confess that I'd have been lost without it to be honest!
Julian Thompson Posted August 5, 2010 Author Share #28 Posted August 5, 2010 although if you're in that situation again it's best to shoot the correct speed and underexpose Hmmmn. Yes. This is so true. If only one could roll back the clock. Next time.
Jaybob Posted August 5, 2010 Share #29 Posted August 5, 2010 I sense your frustration in what must have been a complete lack of the shutter speeds 15th thru 125th of a second. I can see it in the bride's face. c-41 bw film PROBABLY would have given you more latitude than you exploited, I probably would have rated that 400 speed film at 640-800-1000, and lived with the results. Without seeing the negative, it's all guesswork, but I think you may have had at least a stop more to go in that dress. I would have sacrificed that for less info in the shadows and blacks, and a smidgen more sharpness. An almost inconsequential tiny, tiny, tiny pop of flash would have helped as well, but I understand what you were trying to do. Regardless of camera brand, (unless you shoot with ANY model of Canon, all of which apparently are crafted from magical metal and sorcerer's screws, with just a dash of love, so I 've heard) available darkness shooting can be an unforgiving bee-otch. Sometimes you just have to factor in that your meter may not be telling you exactly what you need to do to make the picture. Jay
Jaybob Posted August 5, 2010 Share #30 Posted August 5, 2010 sorry to come barging in saying the same thing as ndjambrose it is tremendous composition... hindsight is razor sharp.
holmes Posted August 6, 2010 Share #31 Posted August 6, 2010 I was asked to shoot a friends wedding. Foolishly I said yes. Never again. I would have rather have charged a VietMin bunker with a 2 " pocket knife then go through that again. Several years ago a friend called and asked if I would shoot his wedding. I started with flashbacks, and nervous tremors. No Iam not a wedding photographer.
