Keith, that is wise. Manual focusing is possible but not easy with the given LCD resolution. I do use it occasionally at close range, for table-top work with a small tripod, for example. If you try that technique, learn how to move the focus point on screen onto your desired target focus point. That helps with AF.

For me the auto features work quite well on the X cameras, taking into account the descriptions of the various settings in the user manual.

I've had the X1 for a few months now, and I'm really loving it. I use it mainly for landscape shots, but I've also used it for work, as with this shot for a theatre production we're currently working on. I was very pleasantly surprised the camera did so well with low light portrait shots (helped here with the inbuilt flash).

I love how it's compact enough to carry around and be unobtrusive, but I do plan to get a viewfinder and filter tube for the lens.

X2 with optical VF and filter tube. I mostly use the tube with a protective filter and hood, sometimes a polarizer. I usually don't bother with lens caps.
