Yes David.. creamy. That's the thing!!

I did however shoot a few today for an attempt at something.. completely different. Deliberately high contrast bw at iso 3200.. not sure if I am willing to share them here at this point.. i'll consider.. but the users, generally here, I don't think would appreciate the subject.. or understand it (probably due to my lack of conveying it properly).. nonetheless.. it is very organic.. I guess a combination of lens and sensor.

Agree 100% that's the point.

Nicely done Eldondeedo. Just right amount of detail in shadows.....good tonality on that door! Looking back a page I also really like the Bells shot.

My M9 is in Solms and I was staring at up to 2 months without it. I do of course have another 12 cameras to choose from :D but unless I'm shooting wildlife my M9 has become my go-to camera. The nightmare was softened slightly when my wife surprised me with an X1 and so here are a few images and a few comments.

I expected good IQ and it delivers. I was slightly skeptical about "only" having an F2.8 lens but on a first shoot for a couple of hours it was all I needed. I do like the fixed 35mm. I found the camera very unobtrusive. I used the viewfinder and nobody challenged me on any of the shots I took. The X1 is so small and quick to use. Quick? Well you all know the AF isn't quick so I just tried to decide what shot I needed in my mind and only raised the camera at the end. I did not spend too much time composing over shots like the kitchen one. The viewfinder I liked and had understood the limitations and how to use the dotted lines to compensate for parallax error. it is beautifully clear and bright and you can see the green LED for focus lock without too much problem. However I took a few shots where I discovered afterwards the focus had locked on to the wrong subject. I was quite surprised as I was using 1 point AF, centering on the subject then recomposing with the shutter half depressed. Any thoughts?

I don't like having to have a jpeg alongside the DNG files but I can live with it. The jpegs came out slightly darker than the DNGs - each of the images below is a processed DNG, the B&W in Silver Efex Pro. Basically I deleted the jpegs PDQ. :(

I do think its a lot of money for this camera - about HK$20k inc viewfinder - but it is a beautiful camera to handle, light. well balanced and discreet and with a top notch IQ. The controls are easy to understand and well located. Not much to complain about. Value for money maybe 6/10, but otherwise a good 8/10. You only buy it knowing its limitations. I'd give it 9 if the AF was a tad faster. You can not compare it with an M9 or even a 1D mk IV (which I also own for bird photography).

Will I still use it when the M9 is back? Yes but I also have an LX5 and my wife, bless her cotton socks, has suggested I may not need all of them and maybe she can have the X1 afterwards. Now that's a smart approach to present giving!

I really like your color rendition in the second shot...selective desaturation?

Glad you can make it while the m9 is away, sorry it's away though. Hopefully leica can sort out their issues sooner than later (assuming you didn't drop it!)

Nice shots.

Thanks Edward. Yes, selective desaturation. Just playing around. I have a tiny mark on the M9 sensor. The HK guys say it is a scratch and can't remove it. Solms saw a full size DNG file of a blank / white sheet of paper and said they can remove it. So I hope they are right. Expensive if not.

Your photos from the X1 are way TOO SHARP whenever I take photos of ladies I soften the pics a bit. You are making the fundamental mistake IMHO haha when I first got the X1 I took photos of friends and colleagues and many girls werent too happy as all their wrinkles are displayed in their full "glory",.....:D
