ludwig.bertele Posted July 26, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 26, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi everyone, recently i had bought a "brand new" M8 from a camera shop. I was so excited that i could grab the last unit of the digital M. But when i try a few shots and check the unique image id it shows 155... , after i convert it from hex to dec i get a number of 341.... Does it mean my M8 has been clicked for 341 times? I was worried i had been cheated to purchase a demo unit or even worst it is a used unit
Advertisement Posted July 26, 2010 Posted July 26, 2010 Hi ludwig.bertele, Take a look here Riddle for my M8...... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Bert N Posted July 26, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 26, 2010 Yes, that means that the shutter has been activated 341 times. Have you asked the store to comment on your observation? I guess your recourses are: 1) return the camera or 2) negotiate a discount for the less-than-new condition.
Gerard Posted July 26, 2010 Share #3 Posted July 26, 2010 It was my understanding that Leica test all units before they leave the factory, so all will so some actuations. But that sounds high - like it has been tested in store a few times. Hey; as long as it is in good working order, there is not much to worry about. Unless you are not happy with the 'principal' of being sold something as new when it has clearly been used. Talk to the store, I'm sure they will help. mhoersch Posted July 26, 2010 Share #4 Posted July 26, 2010 Your new M8 was probably produced two years ago shortly before the M8.2 came out. Testing at Leica took around 50 to 100 actuations, and then the camera was certainly shown to a few customers at your dealer's. So, 350 actuations should be pretty normal in my opinion. The most important thing that is the distributor giving me a lot of excuse like, when they pass the camera to those shop dealers is consider "Sold" to them. If they using a use unit and sell it to me it would be my problem because of i didn't check properly

I had talk v the store before but they claims that it might be "Leica" test the camera before they boxing it... im not sure leica will or will not reset the image count after they done the testing... I was thinking in this way too, but since they claimed that the camera is not being "touch" before... Im not sure whats their defination of "Not being touch before"... luigi bertolotti Posted July 27, 2010 Share #8 Posted July 27, 2010 Just a question : how was the packaging ? When I bought my M8 the package was still factory sealed (the shutter had 50 actuations or so), and I think is almost impossible to repack completely the box as it's at the factory. matlep Posted July 27, 2010 Share #9 Posted July 27, 2010 When i bought my M9 it had 262 exposures out of the box. There is a thread in the M9 forum where people are listing how many exposures the camera has from the box. Mileage varies from 50 to 300. So maybe it depends on which technician is assembling the camera and adjusting the rangefinder.

The box is not sealed, so it could be open any time, the only thing that is sealed which is those cables, camera strap and other accessories. The camera could be took out easily because no sealed and is able to open and not able to notice is it been open before or not. And 1 more thing i just notice, on the body cap there is a warning sticker in orange color was not available when i bring it home

That is surprising, why Leica doesn't reset it to 0 when they finish the test? is it their procedure/practice that once the shutter is assemble in the camera, the shutter count of the camera will not reset after testing it. Anyway i will look for the thread for the M9....

Anyway i will look for the thread for the M9.... It is this thread if you can´t find it: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/leica-m9-forum/106948-shutter-actuation-number-first-shot.html My memory was a bit off, in the thread it says anything from 50 to about 200. Mine was 262 though.
Double Negative Posted July 27, 2010 Share #13 Posted July 27, 2010 Could possibly be a "demo" unit also... Or an SD card with higher numbering was inserted and the M8 picked up from there.
jaapv Posted July 27, 2010 Share #14 Posted July 27, 2010 The SD card has no influence on the in-camera image counter.
Double Negative Posted July 28, 2010 Share #15 Posted July 28, 2010 The SD card has no influence on the in-camera image counter. Even if numbering is set to "Continuous?" This happens on Canons; I assume(d) it would on the Leica as well. Hey, even better that it doesn't. It's a "bug" if you ask me.
jaapv Posted July 28, 2010 Share #16 Posted July 28, 2010 No, it has an influence on the number output on the SD card, obviously, but the unique image ID is set much earlier in the process.

According in the forum's discussion i found that the unique image ID is unable to reset, other than that like those numbering is able to reset/edit
