ArtZ Posted July 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I was shooting tonight at ISO 1250 (and even a few shots at ISO 2500) and I find noise improvement in version 2.005 (compared to previous firmware versions). For the first time I find pictures taken at 1250 usable. I find also noise @ 2500 is less harsh, more similar to film. Am I dreaming (I haven't been smoking the carpet or anything else...) or someone else has experienced the same?
Advertisement Posted July 23, 2010 Posted July 23, 2010 Hi ArtZ, Take a look here 2.005 and Noise. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
Gerard Posted July 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 23, 2010 Can you smoke any carpet, or does it have to be a special type? Damn; I'll smoke my Nan's pink 70's shag pile if it improves the noise at high ISOs.

ArtZ Posted July 24, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted July 24, 2010 Maybe your exposure was better Maybe. I don't know.. I have tried quite a lot in the past taking pictures at ISO 1250. I gave up about a year ago. I give a try yesterday and I'm plased with the results.
archi4 Posted July 24, 2010 Share #6 Posted July 24, 2010 A probably very stupid question: Did you use the same software and version of it both times? LR3 is much improved over LR2. regards Maurice
ArtZ Posted July 25, 2010 Author Share #7 Posted July 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) A probably very stupid question:Did you use the same software and version of it both times? LR3 is much improved over LR2. regards Maurice Maurice, Last time I tooks pictures using ISO 1250 was with LR 2.5 (I think), C1 4.8 and CS4. Now I´m using LR3, C1 5 Pro and CS5. I agree with you RAW converters have been improved in the last year. But as I still have CS4 in one computer, I gave a try last night to develop the images taken at ISO 1250 and I still sees a clear difference. Noise (there's still noise!) is somehow better, more natural, less harsh, more uniform, more similar to film. But what I have just realised is both cameras have been replaced last year, after I took my last 1250 ISO images. One was fully replaced for a shuter problem after a few trips Paris-Solms and the other one had the sensor and motherboard replaced. Cheers.

PeterP Posted July 26, 2010 Share #10 Posted July 26, 2010 Shot 1250 today, and can't say I saw much of an improvement. Certainly not printable beyond 5x7. A different story however if I convert to B&W, and then add more grain.
sfokevin Posted July 26, 2010 Share #11 Posted July 26, 2010 After updating I mounted my 18 SE and noticed that the red edges have turned a wonderful rose color!...
Guest jarski Posted July 26, 2010 Share #12 Posted July 26, 2010 I haven't been smoking the carpet or anything else... if its not the smoke, have you checked the water ? seriously, should try to update and test also. just dont have the dam card reader and not going to buy just because of this... jaapv Posted July 26, 2010 Share #13 Posted July 26, 2010  How are you going to download your images then? If you use USB there are risks, and it is slooooowww. Not the recommended way. A card reader costs 10$, if you don't get one free with a card...

Look at this thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-post-processing-forum/130997-leica-m8-high-iso-files-lightroom.html I have posted 1:1 sample screen captures with the difference just switching form Lightroom 2 to Lr3 makes. The files were not developed or in any way touched - this is just the difference between the two software versions. I don't see a difference in high ISO shots and shoot regularly at ISO 1250 and 2500 with the M8.2. I would love, there has been something though ;-)
ArtZ Posted July 28, 2010 Author Share #16 Posted July 28, 2010 Look at this thread: http://www.l-camera-forum.com/leica-forum/digital-post-processing-forum/130997-leica-m8-high-iso-files-lightroom.html I have posted 1:1 sample screen captures with the difference just switching form Lightroom 2 to Lr3 makes. I would love, there has been something though ;-) Dirk, I fully agree with you concerning LR3 (and Photoshop CS5) noise reduction improvement. I think I would have hesitated to say I find files at ISO 1250 (and higher) if I had not Photoshop CS4 installed in one computer I haven't upgraded yet. I have to do some more testing but I do have the impression I get cleaner images. As I said, one of my M8 was replaced by a new one and the sensor + the motherboard were replaced in the other one after the lastest HI-ISO I took last year. But I don't believe this could be the reason. While I'm writing this post something comes to my mind. Didn't Leica said few months ago that they were going to correct banding in a next firmware version? Maybe they have done that in this FW version and it has an impact in noise. I don't know. . ampguy Posted August 3, 2010 Share #17 Posted August 3, 2010 I've always found 2500 great with b/w, and occasionally with color, but color is much more sensitive to not underexposing. Here's an ISO 2500 shot (2.004 firmware):
