2.005 and Noise

Hello,

 

I was shooting tonight at ISO 1250 (and even a few shots at ISO 2500) and I find noise improvement in version 2.005 (compared to previous firmware versions).

 

For the first time I find pictures taken at 1250 usable. I find also noise @ 2500 is less harsh, more similar to film.

 

Am I dreaming (I haven't been smoking the carpet or anything else...) or someone else has experienced the same?

Can you smoke any carpet, or does it have to be a special type? Damn; I'll smoke my Nan's pink 70's shag pile if it improves the noise at high ISOs. :D

 

Only Shetland wool carperts. I'm "Organic" :-)

I have tried quite a lot in the past taking pictures at ISO 1250. I gave up about a year ago. I give a try yesterday and I'm plased with the results.

A probably very stupid question:

Did you use the same software and version of it both times? LR3 is much improved over LR2.

Last time I tooks pictures using ISO 1250 was with LR 2.5 (I think), C1 4.8 and CS4. Now I´m using LR3, C1 5 Pro and CS5.

 

I agree with you RAW converters have been improved in the last year. But as I still have CS4 in one computer, I gave a try last night to develop the images taken at ISO 1250 and I still sees a clear difference.

 

Noise (there's still noise!) is somehow better, more natural, less harsh, more uniform, more similar to film.

 

But what I have just realised is both cameras have been replaced last year, after I took my last 1250 ISO images. One was fully replaced for a shuter problem after a few trips Paris-Solms and the other one had the sensor and motherboard replaced.

if its not the smoke, have you checked the water ? :p

 

seriously, should try to update and test also. just dont have the dam card reader and not going to buy just because of this...

:confused::confused: How are you going to download your images then? If you use USB there are risks, and it is slooooowww. Not the recommended way. A card reader costs 10$, if you don't get one free with a card...

Not only that but I have noticed that the images I took before the firmware upgrade have better/less noise too. :)

I have posted 1:1 sample screen captures with the difference just switching form Lightroom 2 to Lr3 makes.

The files were not developed or in any way touched - this is just the difference between the two software versions.

 

I don't see a difference in high ISO shots and shoot regularly at ISO 1250 and 2500 with the M8.2. I would love, there has been something though ;-)

I fully agree with you concerning LR3 (and Photoshop CS5) noise reduction improvement. I think I would have hesitated to say I find files at ISO 1250 (and higher) if I had not Photoshop CS4 installed in one computer I haven't upgraded yet.

 

I have to do some more testing but I do have the impression I get cleaner images. As I said, one of my M8 was replaced by a new one and the sensor + the motherboard were replaced in the other one after the lastest HI-ISO I took last year. But I don't believe this could be the reason.

 

While I'm writing this post something comes to my mind. Didn't Leica said few months ago that they were going to correct banding in a next firmware version? Maybe they have done that in this FW version and it has an impact in noise. I don't know.

I've always found 2500 great with b/w, and occasionally with color, but color is much more sensitive to not underexposing.

 

Here's an ISO 2500 shot (2.004 firmware)

 

Here the same image but at ISO-12500! Yes! Twelve thausand five hundred!!! Amazing! You don't believe me? Well, download the picture and check the EXIF. Yes, you can also get ISO-12500 (and more) with the M8
