sfage Posted July 21, 2010 Share #1 Â Posted July 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Once a Lens is ROM contacted, is that basically it for mounting it on an SL2? It can no longer be placed upon a film cam with that kind of mount? Â Second, I have a Digi 3. I would like -if possible- to use these lenses interchangeably (Sl2 / Digi3). If I buy the adapter ring, does the lens "have" to be coded? Sorry about the "dumb guy question" but what does the coding actually do? Â I'm thinking about buying a 35 cron in Demo condition. Very very nice piece of glass. It's not cheap but I want it.

Very very nice piece of glass. It's not cheap but I want it.  R lenses with ROM can be used on R body's. I use them with my R8 but also the R5. SL's I'm not sure. But I think 2cam and 3cam supported camera's are no problem.  What ROM does: When taking picture with R8/R9 using a Flash TTL it can not only regulate the flash by it's diaphragm and time, but also on Focus point.  With an adapter it works fine. No coding needed.
sfage Posted July 21, 2010 Author Share #3 Â Posted July 21, 2010 Thanks! Â So, I NEVER use a flash. So, that's out. Â The only draw-back about going this route is the D3 finder. It's not quite as bright as we'd like. I can see focusing issues coming down the pipe. The SL 2 -on the other hand- doesn't have this problem. The finder is excellent. jpattison Posted July 21, 2010 Share #4  Posted July 21, 2010 (edited) ROM lenses have a raised flange which stops them from being fitted on SL2 cameras and SL and Leicaflexes. Also the R only (with cams 1 and 2 not present) lens mounts have this flange see... Leica Cams  You can have them converted to 3 or even 2 cam mounts, without the ROM contact or flange. When ROM mounts came out, they will fit all "R" cameras, so the above link is still valid.   John Edited July 21, 2010 by jpattison additional info

spydrxx Posted July 21, 2010 Share #6 Â Posted July 21, 2010 Send it to DAG, he can do a conversion for you. It takes him a long while, but I had him do it for me a couple of years ago, as I had a ROM lens which I wanted to use on both my R8 & SL2. wildlightphoto Posted July 21, 2010 Share #7 Â Posted July 21, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) With slight modification, many ROM lenses can be used on the SL. To use them on the Leicaflex Standard or SL2 the ROM contacts must be removed. Â The modification: the SL's flange is milled to accept the lens' R-only flange, and in some cases the lens lock pin must be modified too. The 2nd cam is added to the lens to get full-aperture metering on the SL. DAG had done this modification for me and I believe Gus Lazzari also knows how. I'll bet Sherry Krauter can do it too. Â This will not work for lenses that require the SL2 or R mirror box clearance.
earleygallery Posted July 21, 2010 Share #8 Â Posted July 21, 2010 Or buy the previous Mandler Cron - plenty about in nice condition and no worries about mounts. Some would say it's also a better lens.
