stuny Posted January 3, 2007 Share #3 Posted January 3, 2007 Rolo - Your signature superb tonal range, depth, contrast and detail paradoxically mixed with softness. Lovely.

Leicanomad Posted January 3, 2007 Share #5 Posted January 3, 2007 Another stunning photo - I particularly like the clouds which create a sense of motion within the scene. I'd be interested to hear some of the technical details, what sort of shutter speed/aperture did you use?
azzo Posted January 3, 2007 Share #6 Posted January 3, 2007 A beautiful scene, captured and enhanced with the clouds' motion. Very nicely cropped and framed too, Rolo. Best Azzo

Rolo Posted January 3, 2007 Author Share #8 Posted January 3, 2007 I'd be interested to hear some of the technical details, what sort of shutter speed/aperture did you use? Well, it was shot on Agfa 25 B&W film and developed in ID11 for 7 mins @ 1:1 @ 68 deg F, (or possibly Rodinal 1:50 for 9 mins). I don't keep details of the exposures, but to get the sky movement I expect this was 24mm @ f8, tripod mounted for 4 secs. I took a Zone III reading on the nearest post and shot half a dozen frames. I normally try to stick around 1 sec for convenience, but it was going dark. Negative is a bit thinner than my liking and it needed more development, but as I was on a camping trip and shooting a few films, I didn't mark up what I wanted to do with each scene. The silver print, like most of my work is printed on fibre based paper using a De Vere cold cathode enlarger. I decided about 5 years ago to resrict myself to 10x8 paper and a lot of prints are 8x8 and toned in home-mixed thiocarbomide and/or Kodak selenium toner. Hence the reason I've presented this small and in a wide mount because that's how the original is. Big prints are great, but limiting in how you can use them in a domestic setting, IMO. Glad you like it. I've another shot just 200 yards up the beach from a few hours earlier that I like much more that I'll post some time. Thanks Mr Nomad. If you search for posts in my name you'll find a dozen images I've posted in recent weeks. Andy, it was a beach in a far and distant land down south, called France. ijporter Posted January 4, 2007 Share #13 Posted January 4, 2007 The guillotine was a protoype for a mechanical action, single blade shutter for a very large format French camera designed to take head shots of notable citizens. For some reason, there was a reluctance among citizens to become the subjects of such 'portraiture'. It is hard to know why, for none of its subjects ever expressed dissatisfaction with the finished product. BTW, Rolo - are you The Stig? with best wishes, Ian
