Handgrip question.

I'm thinking of picking it up since I have large hands - but I have a really basic question - sorry.

 

Does the hand grip offer a tripod mount since it occupies the preliminary? It seems like a good solution to protect the bottom of the camera (i like low shots) but being unable to quickly move to a tripod would kind of stink.

 

Thanks for the info, I was unable to find a picture of the bottom to verify.

I tried it yesterday on mine Edward.

 

The gray Ever Ready Case requires the grip to be fitted and I wanted to see if this case is an improvement over the brown leather hard case.

 

Yes the grip has a tripod mount but it's placed more to right side of the body (looking at the LCD side). I must say that the grip looks and feels cheap and plastic and doesn't improve the cameras' look. But that doesn't say anything about how it works.

I didn't really liked the feel of the grip but that is very personal.

Thanks for the information Richard. I think it may help me due to hand size - but it seems I need to order from a place that will offer easy return. I certainly think given the plastic construction and the fact they didn't paint it to match, it seems to be an expensive add on for what it is.

the hand grip was made of plastic but it has a nice finish. besides it can also give you a good handling feeling. the problem is you need to find the right case to fit the X1 with hand grip.

 

you are in the US, why you need to worry. if you don't like it, you can return it. i cannot do it in Thailand.

I find the grip indispensable and would not be without it. I also use the Leica erc body part and have found a useful belt bag from Lowepro called Apex 100. That case take my X1 configured ready for use, viz hand-grip, case bottom and viewfinder. There is also room for a spare battery and cards. It is very easy to extract the X1; shoot and return the camera out-of-site if the local situation requires discretion.

Thanks for the input guys - I have a case covered - I use the crumpler 3 million dollar home, which allows a dslr to fit (barely)..or the x1 and a pair of glasses with some other extras.. it's like a tiny messenger back and very nondescript (which I like).

I bought the handgrip, not sure if I'll keep it.. it's pretty small and somewhat awkward at first review. My hands may be larger than some though, so I find I have to lace my middle finger over the top of the grip. I'll give it a bit of time.

 

Fwiw - my hands are about 7.75" from palm to top.

Interesting Edward; giving the measurement of your hand from palm to top. I just measured mine. My hand is 7" from palm to top. I looked at what an extra inch would do and I must say your hands must be large indeed, covering a significantly larger area than mine. With that said, I dislike the cheap plastic feel of the handgrip but for me, it makes the camera much easier to handle.

Turns out I was off, your post triggered me to actually measure my hand - it's just over 8". I figured given my height I may be alone in finding it awkward... and I am still trying to find the comfortable level with it.. I've got some time to try it Thanks for taking the time to give me your hand size - that does actually help me (probably sounds weird but sometimes it's nice to know that there is a difference physically). iirc Steve Huff said he really liked the grip but that he had smaller hands.

My hands are over 8" as well and I didn't think the grip would help me when I tried it. It still felt small. I'd rather it just be smaller and lighter than add something that doesn't end up helping much.

I think that, perhaps, one of you guys with larger hands should try the Thumbs Up for the Leica X1,

especially if you notice that your thumb is supporting the X1 on the upper portion of the LCD screen.

That may be the way to go, both the thumbs up and grip, but zowie ~$300 on ergonomics

another vote for Luigi's half case with grip, as the one previously shown. it works and the leather is top notch...

Yes, I see the dilemma Edward. If you get the Thumbs Up and like it, perhaps you can sell the Leica hand grip to help cover the cost. As far as the Luigi case is concerned, I think why I would be resistant to it is that it really covers up the clean lines and beauty of the X1.
