Stephen.s1 Posted July 11, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Title asks it all. German prices are very favorable compared to those in US. Hence the question. Thanks

peter_n Posted July 12, 2010 Share #3 Posted July 12, 2010 There are other threads on import tariffs to the US here, I remember actually posting sections from relevant US tariff pages for still cameras in them. Six months ago or more, there was no import duty for still cameras imported into the US from Europe, but you should check the currently published Harmonized Tariff Schedule of the United States for yourself to verify that. Don't use courier services such as UPS or FedEx. They charge a ripoff brokerage fee for the non-existent "clearing" of goods through US customs. Insist on the Postal Service of the country you're buying from as the shipper.
msk2193 Posted July 12, 2010 Share #4 Posted July 12, 2010 Stephen, As Peter states. Use the USPS; they have a standard "we are not agents for US Customs" attitude and most often will not collect on import duties if there are any.
spylaw4 Posted July 12, 2010 Share #5 Posted July 12, 2010 The problem with using the postal service rather than a courier is insurance. Most postal services don't offer a sufficient level to cover the value of, say, an expensive lens to say nothing of an M9.

dpattinson Posted July 12, 2010 Share #8 Posted July 12, 2010 The problem with using the postal service rather than a courier is insurance. Most postal services don't offer a sufficient level to cover the value of, say, an expensive lens to say nothing of an M9. My insurers will cover my camera while it's being shipped around. I'm pretty sure that includes gear I've bought while it's en-route, so long as I inform them in advance.
tdtaylor Posted July 16, 2010 Share #9 Posted July 16, 2010 Just for information sake: I am in Maryland, USA and ordered a 50 lux ASPH from Robert White in Great Britain. With the exchange rate, it was only $2,800 US (ordered in March). They shipped on the 13th, and UPS attempted to deliver it today, but they need a cashiers check for $73 to settle up. I am assuming this is for the Clearing House. Can't complain, RW only charged me $24 for Express UPS shipping, which baffled me at the time.. What is the best news is it will be here before 10:30 tomorrow and I leave for a vacation tomorrow afternoon :D:D
