I really think it is time to get the boys in blue in.

Well, got an email from ebay , that says among other things :

"We're writing to let you know that the listing for the following item you bid on has been removed:

190408616826 - Leica M9

We removed the listing and canceled your bid because it appears that the seller's account was used by someone without the seller's permission. The seller's selling privileges might be temporarily suspended while we investigate. Because of privacy concerns, we can't share more details.

..."

Hope that ebay honors their word and solves this (returns money through the ebay resolution process), l like they said they would

hmmm... well, it would be odd indeed if 'someone' also managed to use the seller's bank account to accept payment 'without permission'.

I agree with jaap, time to call the police.

If you paid by by bank tranfer did the seller supply you with an IBAN code? If he did have a look at this page to see if it was in a UK format...

IBAN (International Bank Account Number) – An introduction – Experian Payments

If it didn't start with the letters 'GB' you should be able to find out what country his bank code actually was. If it did start with 'GB' what are the first six numbers - 089299 in the example shown in the link. That will allow the bank branch to be found.

Yes it was,it's in GB...format ...it's a bank also in Wigan...i have the iban and the account name owner's...

Appartently someone hacked / or stolen into the user account (so he already had a history and feedback) and used it to sell "cameras" ...he listed 5 m9s ...apparently i am not the only one that "brough them"...i am waiting.

Since i reported it...the "REAL" user has warned and he contacted me , moments ago ,telling me about the hacking...ebay will answerr to me shortly...with good news about the Insurace / Protection process ...i hope

Thanks !

Ohh Dear,

I think I may have also fallen for an M9 scam in the UK.......

Keen to try out an M9 (current Nikon D3 user), and facing 3-4 month wait I was watching the M9s on eBay UK, and after corresponding with several sellers who seemed genuine enough I bought one. The seller didn't want to meet to exchange for cash "you never know who will turn up" and claimed the camera was an unwanted present.

Since then he's e-mailed to say its been sent, but has ignored my repeated requests for tracking info.

Although he has bought and sold Hi Fi and cameras, the eBay account holder and the Paypal account holder have different names. The photos all look 'stock', so I think I've been a bit stupid......

I did pay on Paypal with a CC so I should be OK, and I have raised a claim but must wait a week to see if it arrives. Given the thread above it would bet that ALL the M9s on eBay are scams.........

The listing is no longer there. Looks like it was a scam.

Well, I’ve had an interesting experience recently too. Looking for a used M8-2, I came upon an advert in the Edmonton (Alberta) Buy and Sell. Good price, I live ‘just around the corner’ in Vancouver so, I contacted the seller.

Reply came back - yes, it is still for sale and the seller got a new job in Italy. He left the camera with a friend in Calgary (I guess he got the two Albertan cities mixed up) and the friend entrusted the camera to the Shipsurance warehouse there. All I have to do is send the money and the camera will be mine. Yippee!

A quick search of the IP address from the email revealed Calcutta, India. Of course there is no such thing as a 'Shopsurance Warehouse' in Calgary either.....I am trying to correspond with the fellow and hopefully will get more information out of him and waste some of his valuable time……. Interestingly, the original advert has now disappeared.

As they say - if it sounds too good……….

Best,

Jan

Not really, you don't have really have to Pay via Paypal, to get Buyer Protection :

eBay Buyer Protection

"Conditions under which a case can be filed under the eBay Buyer Protection Policy ..." and so on...

It's pretty confusing, but apparently since they accepted a Case , it means that i am Insured and it's OK how i payed (if not , from what i understood when i Chatted with a n ebay agent, they wouldn' have opened it) ... but i'll believe when everything is solved :o

eBay will always 'open a case' to pretend that they are trying to solve your issue. Even if they know right from the beginning that they will not be able to help. That is how their phone agents have been trained.

I hate to be the first bearer of bad news but, if you paid via a bank transfer, eBay will not help.

Best,

Jan

I'm a regular e-bayer and have followed this thread with interest. Personally I have never been scammed, but clearly they are out there and you have to have your radar up looking for signs that don't add up.

However it got me thinking how much scamming has changed with the advent of the internet. My brother in law went to New York in the 80's and decided to buy a nice SLR, can't remember the brand. The shop owner showed him one he decided on. He was told he couldn't use the camera in USA to claim the duty free, uhoh. When he got home (Australia) and opened the box, low and behold all he had was the shell of a camera . I suppose he could have contacted police in NY but he couldn't be bothered.

Nowdays scammers are invisible and it is nearly impossible to track them down.

I'm a regular E-Bayer, and I've bought and sold Leica, and other equipment with no issues. But, I do come across sales that are simply too good to be true with complicated payment instructions from individuals with hardly any feedback, or when you check the positive feedback it is for junk that sold for $1.25 . If you are not an experienced E-bayer you should not be buying expensive items on E-Bay. That's the bottom line unless you have an experienced E-bayer who can advise you. I feel really badly for those who get scammed.
