Small bag for my M9

Lets talk bags for a second. What do you guys use to carry your M9? I already have large and medium size bags, but looking for a small camera bag that will protect my M9 from rain/moisture and cushion it properly for transport. I am not looking to carry a bunch of lenses, just one (maybe two tops including the one on the body). I would prefer not to get a Leica branded bag; something a little less conspicuous.

Anyone have suggestions? I could always go to Wal Mart, but I figure the good people of this board may have some creative suggestions for small bags that are user friendly and built for durability & protection.

They certainly have. And you can benefit from them by using the search function.

Dependent upon what you intend doing, I find the Lowepro Inverse 100Aw an excellent as a quick scout waist pack. It has enough room for the camera body with lens, one or two other lenses, my mobile, a spare battery, a water bottle, map, compass and etc.

The most impressive thing about this waist pac (having been through a few in the past) is that when the straps are adjusted it does not 'bounce' when descending terrain fast. It also has a good all-weather cover built in - although I normally stick it is my pack when it gets that bad.

Cheers

Good stuff. I guess I should have been more specific - looking for a shoulder strap that I can wear across my chest, but this bag could come in handy on other projects. Thanks!

Hi, I cant tell you how long I have been in search of a 'perfect' camera bag. I'm like you, I dont like branded bags and I also don't like them to look like a camera bag so all I've done now is bought separate padded camera bag inserts from this chap on ebay and they fit perfectly into my 'perfect' normal messenger bag, job done for my M9 an extra lens plus room the bag for other bits and bobs.

Ebay shop cameramate2010 a puleme 7519 partition padded camera insert

Hope that helps?

Steve

You might consider the Billingham Hadley (small), which provides room for a rangefinder with lens, spare batteries, flash, additional small point and shoot camera, and IPad in an over the shoulder bag that is reasonably small.

I use the Artist and Artisan 7100, Domke J-803, and Billing Hadley Pro for two M bodies and couple of lenses.

Geez, that's a lot of bags to throw over your shoulder for two bodies and couple of lenses. Isn't that uncomfortable?

I had the Leica Billingham M bag and a similar-sized FOGG, both now gone, and I still have a Billingham Alice (I think they call it an A2 now). Very nice, but it doesn't have a zipper to close the main compartment, and a TSA handler almost dumped everything onto the tile floor once after failing to properly close the press-studs (they probably didn't cover that technology at TSA school ).

I keep coming back to the Domke F5XB. It fits my M8 with one lens on it, plus 4 more with Leica back-to-back coupler rings, plus an SF24D flash. The main compartment closes with a large, strong double-pull zipper that could be locked, and an over-flap with a large velcro surface that makes a loud sound if a pickpocket tries to lift it (but can be folded against the body when using the bag). I replaced the factory shoulder strap with an OP-Tech S.O.S. Mini (has a stretchy neoprene center pad that acts like a shock absorber), and also use the Domke canvas waist belt from time to time in less secure environments.

Recently I acquired a J5XB which is the same bag except in ballistic nylon instead of canvas. It's lighter and more water resistant, and the "Domke" label is dark instead of bright red, so more low-key. I picked up an Uncle Mike's Deluxe Duty belt, which is lighter than the Domke canvas waist belt, and also matches the ballistic bag.

I would take a look at the the Think Tank Cahnge-up 130. It has a shoulder strap, and a waist belt that can be tucked away. It also brings an additional shoulder strap and you can use the bag with two straps in your chest or back. It fits the camera with a 35 and has space for an additional lens. It has many pockets and it can even hold an iPad. It's been my best choice in bags since I got my Leica.

I echo what Simon said about the Domke F-8. I have one in olive drab, it doesn't look like a camera bag plus it can hold an M body along with three lenses. It has three usable pockets, and two more, and you can unsnap one end of the shoulder strap, shorten it, and wear the outfit as a waist pack thus freeing your hands. I use it more than either my Domke F-6 or Billingham L2.

Lowepro TLZ Mini

Lowepro - Topload Zoom Mini

Very cool little "zoom" bag - it can carry the M9 with just about any lens attached and the front pocket has enough room for one extra lens plus extra battery - i.e. M9 with 75 mm attached and 24/28/35/or 50 as back up in front pocket - or M9 with 24/28/35 attached and 50 or 75mm in front pocket... I am usually prepared for most situations :)

For more variety, lenses or M9+MP/M7 I carry a Billlingham Combination or Hadley Pro bag.

Cheers

For a Leica kit, I like the old style Domke F3-X (before they changed the dimensions to add more height). I ran mine through the wash a few times, then gave it a few hours in the dryer (without heat) with 6 tennis balls and a pair of Vans tennis shoes to give it nice "I'm not a camera bag" look.

With a Domke F6 insert, it will hold a pair of M bodies with lenses attached, and at least a couple of other lenses. The side pockets hold film (or Gepe card safes), light meter, notebook, business cards, etc.
