jaapv Posted July 5, 2010 Share #1 Posted July 5, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Following a link of Bigsplash Frank, who claimed he had had such a cable made, I contacted Michael Bass and got the following reply: Hi Jaap, This version of the Low Profile Hot Shoe Pickup is for manual sync only, just to be clear. Only the center contact (pos) and rail (neg) is passed along, and not the other 3 data pins. A full dedicated pickup including all the pins is likely possible, but no one has yet contracted for that item, so it is still in the idea phase. If this is something you are interested in, I might give it additional design time. It would be an additional $55 [...to 145$...] to have the Low Profie Hot Shoe Pickup end in a hot shoe. This item can be shipped to Holland via First Class Mail for $16, Priority Mail for $26, or Express Mail for $37. Regards, Michael So I wonder, given that this would be a new design for him, would anybody else be interested in such a cable?
Advertisement Posted July 5, 2010 Posted July 5, 2010 Hi jaapv, Take a look here Visoflex flash cable. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
chrism Posted July 6, 2010 Share #2 Posted July 6, 2010 That's great, Jaap! You mean I can hot sync a flash when using the 560mm lens? What? Oh. I see. My sister in law once showed me a flash photograph of Cusco at night, taken from an overlooking mountain. Hmmm. Chris
stunsworth Posted July 6, 2010 Share #3 Posted July 6, 2010 You can use a Visio for macro as well as tele work.

Chris No, but I would be able to use flash with any lens from 65 mm onwards and with any macro lens I care to use. You may be unaware that flash is often used in macro work. chrism Posted July 6, 2010 Share #5 Posted July 6, 2010 Thank you both for pointing out the obvious, and yes I did already know. My poor attempt at humour failed. Sorry. Chris
jaapv Posted July 6, 2010 Author Share #6 Posted July 6, 2010 Not your fault - still a bit early in the day - Humor detector obviously switched off this end.
UliWer Posted July 6, 2010 Share #7 Posted July 6, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) I am not sure wether I understand the problem which led to this thread. You can use the Nikon SC 17 or SC 28 flash cable together with a visoflex if you use the vertical viewfinder. It enables the complete functions of a SF 24 flash. The Nikon cable is expensive, but the offering to produce a new one doesn't seem to be cheaper.
jaapv Posted July 6, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted July 6, 2010 Yes - but I am no great fan of the verical viewfinder, which is fine when working from a tripod, but not very good handheld. Left-right switched, for instance, and an akward camera-holding.
UliWer Posted July 6, 2010 Share #9 Posted July 6, 2010 That's right. Though using a Visoflex for macro together with a flash on a cable won't leave you so many chances for handheld working.

Guest BigSplash Posted July 12, 2010 Share #11 Posted July 12, 2010 Following a link of Bigsplash Frank, who claimed he had had such a cable made, I contacted Michael Bass and got the following reply: So I wonder, given that this would be a new design for him, would anybody else be interested in such a cable? Jaapv to be clear I had a cable made up by Michael Bass that provides the centre contact only and is low profile enough to fit below the Viso with a 90 degree finder attached. The actual item required considerable to and fro after Michael supplied a unit that had to be squeezed into the hot shoe and this I later learned was a prototype. I took many micrometer measurements of that prototype on a M8 and supplied this to Michael who then produced a unit that works well. Another source of confusion I experienced was with respect to the plug that is fitted...he has many types and in the final event I settled on a PC jack (as he calls it) and a short adapter lead that takes this jack (male) and provides a flash sync "flying lead" socket that accepts the plug from a standard flash sync. (ie the one that would plug into a M6). This arrangement allows me to plug different flash guns and also allows e in future to use a radio flash synch head if I ever need. Michael Bass Posted July 24, 2010 Share #13 Posted July 24, 2010 Just to be clear to all, it is discussed on my site that just about everything is a custom made to order prototype item. None of the items, devices, or projects are mass produced. The original specs and clearances for the Low Profile Hot Shoe Pickup came from another forum member who this was made for. Frank did indeed then provide valuable and very precise measurements which refined the actual clearances from the initial prototype (thanks Frank). I provide detailed descriptions of the many connection types and sizes in images and text, and since I am in the USA, I use the terms that are standard here. In e-mail conversations with photogs from all over, I will make reference to a specific connection by the same names, and insist that any potential customer use the same terms to avoid confusion.
