ShutterCount and serial numbers

I downloaded the little tool: M8Inf.exe at this site :home

Is it real? -> the ShutterCount? Is that the number of actions the body had? Can it be cheated?

Reason for asking is that I bought me a second hand M8. And this program tells me that it had 1608 shots. I find that really hard to believe.

Maybe it's young so any idea what year the serial 31989XX is?

The ShutterCount value is not very reliable. It can be tampered with, and as far as I know it usually will become reset when the camera is serviced. So most likely your camera has had more than 1,608 actuations ...

The best method I know of determining the actual use of an 'M' is to check the ImageUniqueID in the EXIF data.

This value is in Hexadecimal, and when converted to decimal, it gives you number of actuations. This value cannot be altered by the owner, and rarely if ever gets reset by Leica. My camera made two trips to Solms for sensor issues, and the value was not reset by them.

See below for an example. The picture has an ImageUniqueID of Hex 19C. Converted to Decimal, this gives a value of 412.

It's quite possible that your camera has a low count, as some of us 'olduns' still treat our cameras as if they were using film, and don't go into AK47 mode when taking pictures.

Enjoy you camera. :)

The shuttercount only gets reset if the motherboard is renewed, but that is revealed in EXIF on the motherboard version number. If it doesn't tally with the age of the camera (e.g. a 310.xxxx camera with a version 1 or 2 board) then the image count is possibly incorrect. There is no way of tampering with it, this is a factory setting.
