damnsharp Posted June 30, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 30, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Is it bad to point with the X1 towards the sun? Or does it depends what time of day? I think maybe it's not good for the sensor. Thanks!
Advertisement Posted June 30, 2010 Posted June 30, 2010 Hi damnsharp, Take a look here Point at the sun. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jsrockit Posted June 30, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 30, 2010 Shouldn't the shutter guard the sensor? Also, aren't sensors light receiving devices? They should be able to handle it.
mjh Posted June 30, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 30, 2010 The live view requires the shutter to be open nearly all the time, so the shutter doesn’t provide protection. Pointing the camera toward the sun with the lens focused on infinity might burn a hole into the sensor, although in practice you would need to use a tripod to make sure the result will be fatal. As a rule of thumb, what is bad for your eyes should not be inflicted on a sensor.
damnsharp Posted June 30, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted June 30, 2010 Thanks for the quick replies. Then I hope I didn't damage the sensor because yesterday I've made this shot on a tripod around 9 o' clock in the evening but I could hardly see into the sun. Flickr Photo Download: Leica X1: sun I shall make a photo from a white piece of paper to see if I can see anything odd.

RichardM8 Posted July 1, 2010 Share #6 Posted July 1, 2010 A sensor cannot be damaged by pointing it at the sun imo. Possibly(...) only when a lot of heat is generated but that is not the case when taking a picture. Indeed maybe when you put it on a tripod, lens and shutter wide open and leave it like that. But even then I doubt it. With too much light on the sensor the pixels simply put out their maximum voltage resulting a 'perfect' 255 RGB white blow-out. Possibly(...) only when a lot of heat is generated but that is not the case when taking a picture. Taking a picture is the least concern; it is the live view that leaves the sensor vulnerable. With the lens focused at infinity it would concentrate all the light from the sun in a nice, small, and soon very hot spot on the sensor. With a hand-held camera this spot would wander across the sensor, usually preventing damage; also during live view the camera will stop down, reducing but not eliminating the threat. Still there is a real chance for the sensor to be fatally damaged. Again: what’s bad for your eyes is probably bad for the sensor.
jankap Posted July 1, 2010 Share #8 Posted July 1, 2010 Amsterdam lies under the smoke of IJmuiden (steel industry). The sun is not so intense there. Jan

I doubt you will find anything wrong with it. cheers, tom
