likalar Posted June 25, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 25, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) M9, 90mm Elmarit M..... The Varyag passes under the Bay Bridge, toward open sea, this morning after a few days of friendly visiting. The ship carries 16 cruise missiles, and is the first Russian warship here in 147 years. Security was tight. I was asked to stay 700 feet from the ship while it was at dock.. Thanks for having a look. Regards, Turner Thanks for the great comments, all. Turner, it was a rare sight, but I expected protests, peace-niks with banners, tie-dye shirts, etc....Nothing! Our hippies are slipping into old age, glued to a soccer game, or maybe just sleeping late. ;-)
Sailronin Posted June 27, 2010 Share #8 Posted June 27, 2010 Great shot, hard for me to get a grip on a Russian warship under the Bay Bridge. My how things change. Interesting deck layout with the launch tubes fore and aft, ours are athwart ship as far as I've seen. Thanks for sharing. Dave

daveleo Posted July 3, 2010 Share #12 Posted July 3, 2010 Larry . . . . quite the photo, and the story too ! . . . . is this were 1970, we'd have WW3 on our hands Herb . . . interesting comment . . . i am thinking that the fore-aft alignment would reduce the ship's roll during launch . . . ? . . . i am guessing. Dave I think the latest surface ships use a vertical launch system (VLS) for cruise missiles similar to the launch tubes on a Trident sub.
