I just wonder. I've never used an M camera.

How does X1 compare to the M8. Many of you say the X1 is better in many ways, but honestly, is it really ?

Size and everything is certainly something, but if we speak imagequality only.

What you say

The X1 compares very favorably to he M8. I use both and he 28mm Elmarit on he X1 is a fantastic lens . The compactness of the X1 body makes it a great travel camera.

I had both and I kept the X1 at the same time for awhile, but now I only have the X1.

One of the biggest differences is of course the ability to change lens on the M8.2 compare to X1's fixed lens. If you like to shoot with different focal lengths, then M8.2 is the way to go, if you can't afford the M9.

After experiencing the two camera, I am more pleased with the quality from the X1 to be honest. With the M8.2, it certainly feels better in the hands and it's great to be able to manual focus on the lens, but high ISO on the M8.2 is absolutely hopeless. I wouldn't go over ISO400 with the M8.2 to be honest. On the other hand, with the X1, the max is ISO3200 and even that is very good. I have always been a Nikon DSLR person, I had the D700 and I was amazed how the X1 can produce comparable photos. In fact, the X1 is so good, I even sold my D700. I think it must be the Leica lens magic!

In terms of the operation, M8.2 and X1 are very similar.

I mean if you never used a M camera before, why not try the X1 first? I think you will be happy with the X1.

The way I would do it is to get the X1 and use the spare money to get a film M camera and a lens. Then you'll have a compact convenient camera to use everyday and you'll have a "Full Frame" M system.

Caimi - The lens on the X1 is actually a 24mm Elmarit, not that it really matters, it is an EXCELLENT lens.

As for comparing the X1 with the M8 (with the 24mm Elmairt-M), I think the image quality is very similar with the advantage going to the X1 because of the higher ISO performance. Couple that with more pixels and the X1 takes the cake in terms of picture quality.

However, the Ms do have the advantage with interchangeable lenses, better (much much better) manual focusing, and the ability to use film instead of digital :p

+1

Exactly my thinking as well.

X1 & MP + assorted M glass is my ultimate traveling kit.

I kept my X1 and sold my M8. Bought a D700 as my M8 replacement. The framelines were just too inaccurate for me. I liked the X1's IQ better as well. That doesn't mean it is better though...just that I preferred it.

I have the X1. And I think it is great.

But it is delivered back because of the menu-bumping. Takes about 3 weeks.

I just wonder how it stands against M8

Here is a different answer:

up to ISO 640 I would prefer M8 image quality.

I also feel I am quite a bit faster with the M8 vs the x1.

The advantage of x1 I see is smaller size and better high ISO and included flash.

The advantage of M8 is a nice optical viewfinder, interchangable lenses, no AA filter-> better pixel sharpness from the beginning, faster focusing (IMO), better when using zone focus since DOF marks on the lens,

Put a f1.4 lens on the M8 and the high ISO disadvantage isnt as huge any more.

Both are nice but again for me mai argument for the x1 would be the relativly small size/light weight.

True. But I think in this equation the argument that the X1 costs 3, 4, 5 times (?) less than the M8 + 1.4 is worth mentioning too? ;)

Richard - Very valid point. To get similar effective local length and ISO performance on my M8, I would say you'd have to use a 24 Lux. And we all know that costs an arm and a leg... compared to a measly $2000 :p

I totally agree and I also think to remember that even Leica itself said that they placed the x1 to fill the gap between small sensor Leicas/Panas and the M-Line- not only size wise but also price wise.
