jtannen Posted June 23, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 23, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hello, I recently purchased a lovely M8.2 and would greatly appreciate any advice. I know this has been discussed quite a bit, but regarding framelines only, do folks recommend coding a pre-asph 35mm Summicron lens? Thanks so much! andybarton Posted June 23, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 23, 2010 Welcome to the forum - first post 5 1/2 years after joining must qualify you for some sort of prize Coding has no affect on framelines.
tecumseh Posted June 23, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 23, 2010 I coded my lenses with the M Coding Kit (essentially £80 for a magic marker and a stencil) and it made little difference beyond telling me the focal length in EXIF data. I wouldn't bother but I could sell you the kit for the knock down price of £40 (for a magic marker and a stencil...) so you can see it not making a difference for yourself! bocaburger Posted June 23, 2010 Share #4 Posted June 23, 2010 If you use an IR filter (and you probably will want to) you can get some greenish color cast in the corners with wideangle lenses, which if they're coded the firmware works its magic and gets rid of that cast (even in DNG). Otherwise you can do it with 3rd party software in post but it's an added and unnecessary step. Some say 35mm lenses are above the cut-off point for the green corners, others disagree. I coded my 35's without doing any testing. I didn't use any coder kit or magic marker, I marked off the sensor borders on the outer body flange and then transferred the markings to the lens, divvied the area up into six segments and ground in little recesses for just the black coding marks, then filled them with black auto touchup paint. Works perfectly and won't wear off...but I don't advocate this for anyone who doesn't have a steady hand with a Dreml (or who is concerned with keeping his lenses strictly OEM. My older 35 Cron is not on Leica's codable list, and it's far from mint anyway).
luigi bertolotti Posted June 23, 2010 Share #5 Posted June 23, 2010 Why do you specify "regards framelines only" ? Any Summicron 35 makes the correct framelines to appear in the viewfinder... even the goggled versions. Afaik the only 35 that turns up uncorrect framelines is the very first Summaron 3,5. Anyway... I'd suggest coding for the above quoted UVIR filter issue.
jaapv Posted June 23, 2010 Share #6 Posted June 23, 2010 The goggled Summaron 35 will gve the correct framelines
