andybarton Posted July 9, 2006 Share #1 Posted July 9, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) What a very odd place we live in This is "Airstrip 1 - 53:17:00N 03:04:00W", about 12 miles North of Chester Here is a quick and dirty pano looking across the River Dee, which is the border between Wales (just seen over on the left) and England, where I am standing. I am looking pretty much North at this point. The Irish Sea is over the horizon, with Ireland at the other side. 200 years ago, the river came up to this wall (at high tide at least, maybe all the time). Large ships used to anchor in the main river and small lighters and ferries would move passengers out from this port. Handel embarked from here to go to Dublin for the first performance of The Messiah, and Emma, Lady Hamilton, lived here while "taking the waters". Then they canalised the river at Chester, forcing the water over to the Welsh side, and the English side silted up. Until the war, this was a huge sandy beach (I posted images from similar beaches further down river, at the mouth with Liverpool Bay), but since the war, this marsh grass has completely taken over. So, now, it looks like a huge field in front of a port. It is a nature reserve of international standing now So, there we are. This is where I live. It's actually very difficult to photograph, because it's all on one side of the road and the marsh is full of mosquitoes, ponds, rivulets and other waters. Welcome, dear visitor! ed_oneal Posted July 9, 2006 Share #4 Posted July 9, 2006 Very interesting place. I looked up your coordinates on Google Earth and it settled on a point in a large field behind a row of houses. Was that the airfield? WWII? Ed
marc_dufour Posted July 9, 2006 Share #5 Posted July 9, 2006 I like the picture, and your comments do it even more interesting. I think it's good habit to know the context, and a substantial help for us. Marc
stunsworth Posted July 9, 2006 Share #6 Posted July 9, 2006 Ed I've always thought that Andy's reference to 'Airstrip One' related to something that an American Army Officer said during the cold war to the effect that if there was a nuclear war in Europe, the now largely empty UK would make an ideal airstrip for launching attacks on Russia. andybarton Posted July 9, 2006 Author Share #7 Posted July 9, 2006 Advertisement (gone after registration) Thanks for the comments guys. Airstrip 1 is from George Orwell's "1984" - after all, we may as well be there now as 22 years ago There were no airfields on this side of The Wirral during the war (although there was one where the Vauxhall Car Factory now is) And the co-ordinates are only "roughly" where we live - on Google Earth, the sat images are very crude. The village is called Parkgate and is near a small town called Neston, in Cheshire, England. The actual co-ordinates of where I was standing this morning, to take this shot, are Lat: 53:17:30N Lon: 3:04:22W
starwatcher Posted July 9, 2006 Share #8 Posted July 9, 2006 Andy, I like it because it is a combination of a good photo, the story and, most important, a part of your life. This could be a nice sequence if everybody would introduce himself in a similar way. best - Klaus
marc_dufour Posted July 9, 2006 Share #9 Posted July 9, 2006 Agree with you, Klaus. It could be a fine travel, if each presents his own environment. Marc
LUF Admin Posted July 9, 2006 Share #10 Posted July 9, 2006 By the way: What do you think of a map in the forum showing where all members live? Or a Google Earth Layer? Regards Andreas
firoze Posted July 9, 2006 Share #11 Posted July 9, 2006 A fine photo, Andy. I like the composition and the clouds. Looks like it was shot on a D-Lux 2 because of the approx 16:9 format! Regards.
andybarton Posted July 9, 2006 Author Share #12 Posted July 9, 2006 Well, I've declared my hand... Some may have an issue with privacy or security worries, but in general, I think it's an interesting idea.

lambroving Posted July 9, 2006 Share #16 Posted July 9, 2006 Andreas, Often this site does a better job of aerial views and requires no software downloads. http://local.live.com/default.aspx?cp
firoze Posted July 9, 2006 Share #17 Posted July 9, 2006 Andy, Yeah, I know you don't have a D-Lux 2. Regards.
ed_oneal Posted July 9, 2006 Share #18 Posted July 9, 2006 The extent of the marsh grasses is readily apparent on both local.live.net and Google Earth.
jmr Posted July 9, 2006 Share #19 Posted July 9, 2006 Andreas, I like the Google Earth idea so we can all see where we each live. There's a very similar feature on a car forum I occasionally frequent, which also uses vBulletin. You can always put in an approximate location to maintain privacy if you prefer.
