Robinyuill Posted June 11, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 11, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi there. Got a good used M8 recently and have been really pleased but took some images today and found some had a line down the center of the frame and each side appeared with slightly different exposure. Not on every frame but on quite a few. Lens was an old 50mm Elmar collapsable (lens always extended) on test but don't think it is due to the lens or could it be? Any ideas? Should I be worried and get camera back to dealer under warranty? Help! Thanks. Robin.
Advertisement Posted June 11, 2010 Posted June 11, 2010 Hi Robinyuill, Take a look here Sensor fault?. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
jaapv Posted June 11, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 11, 2010 Yes you should return the camera. The sensor reads out in two halves and the amplifiers of the respective channels are unbalanced. Probably the mother board needs to be replaced.
Sailronin Posted June 12, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 12, 2010 OH NO!! My dear M8 just developed the same problem this week! Looks like it needs to go to New Jersey. I'm not a happy camper tonight. Dave
Robinyuill Posted June 12, 2010 Author Share #4 Posted June 12, 2010 Thanks for replies. Called David Stephens in Manchester and he said "No problem, bring it back and get it replaced" Seems to pay and get a good dealer in the first place then no problems with faults. Only a bit disappointed that in all the time I have had digital cameras, Nikon D90, D200 and D1x, D2x I never had a problem with sensor defects. Still I am now a committed Leica owner and will persist with M8 till I can save up for a M9!!! In my dreams!! Thanks, Robin.
jaapv Posted June 12, 2010 Share #5 Posted June 12, 2010 Actually, this centrefold problem was a huge issue with some very expensive medium format digital backs...

Sorry to hear of your issue. They quoted me 12 weeks by phone when I sent mine in for the shutter replacement, but actual turnaround was 6 to 7 weeks. I'm hoping they've "dug out" from under their backlog. Let us know when you know? Cheers! Will
Robinyuill Posted June 16, 2010 Author Share #8 Posted June 16, 2010 Hi there. Thanks for the replies. The camera returned to normal but I still took it back to dealer and he reinstalled software. Offered a replacement but going to keep it and if problem returns it's off to Leica. Fingers crossed there will be no return. Regards, Robin.

Guest Chris M Posted June 23, 2010 Share #11 Posted June 23, 2010 The second M8 I just sold a month ago which had only 1100 actuations on it also is back in NJ for a mother board replacement, the new owner is pissed off at me and wanted the hole $7,700.00 back for the M8 outfit I sold him,..... but, thank god he signed a contract twice saying, sold as is, no buy back or returns with this sale. All Sales are final, signed time stamped and dated and witnessed by my wife and his friend, thats 4 signatures on the sales contract. I told him I was sorry but that was it, He was going to be out almost the whole price (again) of the M8 portion of the purchase one more time, and I hung up the phone. Boy am I sure glad I got out of that one. Just a side note, I have recently been noticing M8's etc, are starting to fail now, the new comers who plan on getting into leica and more specifically the M8's, (need to be aware) of the likely possibility of costly repairs of the Used M8's, M8u's and M8.2's market, as they are getting older now. cm
jaapv Posted June 23, 2010 Share #12 Posted June 23, 2010 yes- maybe, I do not really notice a trend. But sensor faults are usually covered by Leica under courtesy warranty. Or incur minimal charges.
