m9..shutterbutton question

I just set the camera to "soft, discreet" release, which complete eliminates one of the "steps" and makes it a hair-trigger. Feels much more like an M6 that way.

You do lose exposure lock - but who ever shot an M6 with exposure lock? That's why Leica gave us that nice big shutter dial and the aperture click stops on the lens. Switch to manual and use either the internal or an external meter. In other words - shoot the M9 like an M6 and it feels like an M6.

Andy, one reason, I am not satisfied by my M8.2 shutter release is that it is too rough and finicky, to reliably feel the exposure lock.

I do use the M8.2 quite a bit in AE in quickly changing light, although I prefer manual exposure for the control and consistency.

Just because a shutter release assembly is faulty or in this case badly manufactured, to advise, to skip one important function of the camera entirely and revert to old technology doesn't seem sound.

By the way, the shutter release of my M7 feels excellent by comparison: smooth, precise and effortless with distinct steps for exposure lock and release (but still far away from the old Leica cameras including M6).

I will continue, to disassemble, clean and lube mine - too bad, it isn't manufactured to the same quality as the rest of the camera.

today i ordered some scifi nano lubricant to try..will report back...but the thing needs a redesign for sure

I wouldn't use lube at all. You need to let the parts rub together and polish up. If you lube it they will never bed in together and you'll have oil everywhere.

I am pretty convinced by now judging by others experience that the rough button is normal, but I will at some point take it to a dealer to get an opinion. In any case I can live with it and will try and improve it and boy are those leica lenses buttery smooth..THATS precision!

are you sure they will wear in? has yours done this and just how many snaps does it take to be smooth? in any event a dab of lube isn't going to travel anywhere.

Yes I am sure they will run in - both my M8s have and my M9 is well under way - lubricating will slow the process. I took at a guess about 3000 actuations - without oil.

Does this solve the smooth release issue? And why should anyone be forced to give up a feature to make things work the way they should. I do use exposure lock. When you have done so for a while you can get good feel for what to meter on and then press halfway and compose the way you'd like. It is just another way to use the camera as a meter.

It seems to me that one should just leave the power off and repeatedly press the shutter button down hundreds of times until the action feels smooth.
