I think the X1 is a pretty awesome camera, and I don't think there has been much animosity in this thread. Just people talking about and comparing a couple of cameras.

I don't see that as the case js when Leica sorts out the AF and a few other aspects there will be a lot of buyers and there is a heap of working photographers who will add it to their arsenal. I am sure leica are aware of this and the X whatever will enhance the sales of the m9/10 whatever rather than cannibalise them

Time will tell as the m's are still their priority

Let's hope they don't do what they did when they feared the CL would take business away from the Ms.

Somehow I don't think they'll kill the concept completely. A lot of camera makers have their eyes on this.

I dunno but it appears Sony has not made the best decisions lately on a whole slew of their products. Conceptually they are strong but since the death of its founder they do not seem to really get their act together, and to think they used to dominate.

Sony does have a history of innovation as far as bringing neat stuff to the consumer is concerned. Where Sony really fails is in their product durability, and the inexcusable way they "service" their products in fly-by-night outfits. Personally I wouldn't buy Sony anything if their CEO knocked on my door and offered me a tour of their facilities and a free camera. Free Sony still costs too much, since my time has value.

Hey... I want to thank to people in this post who posted without attacks and added their honest opinion and useful information....

I was choosing between the X1 and the NEX-3/5.

I choose the NEX-3, for these reasons....

1. I couldn't justify the price, I really like the Leica, but 2k was too much. I was able to get a NEX-3, a M2 in good condition, a used 50 Summicron, and a M mount adapter with 500 to spare.

2. The NEX shoots nice movies, I didn't need "full HD," so the 720p works for me.

3. In fact, the ability to shoot different lenses from different mounts appeals to me; I have a great used shop in town and I'm looking forward to the experiments.

4. I brought it from Best Buy, which means, I have 45 days (with Silver Membership) to find a used Leica X1 for around 1500 (I missed one before :() and still return the NEX-3 to the store.

5. I think the quality, resale value, uniqueness, prestige, image quality, quietness, and for me, slowness of pace when shooting, outweigh the slow AF and other faults/quirks, but not for 2+ times the price of the NEX-3.

P.S. There is only one new X1 in my city, so I was about to touch, but not use the camera and I have the feeling that I had I been able to test it out, it may have been a different choice... who knows.....

Thanks again all... I've been stalking this post for a while and just wanted to add this note.

You make a very important point. The price differential needs to be evaluated based on personal needs and is very subjective. If picture quality can be quantified, then what price would one pay for say, a 1% improvement in IQ? The answer will vary depending on the needs and the value one places on the differential. In some cases, IQ is not the important factor and other things like weather sealing may be the deciding factor.

Is the S2 really worth $23,000 and can M9 justify its price of $6,000 or so when Canon 5D Mk II or Nikon D700 can be had for ~ $2,300? There is no right answer.

Enjoy your Nex. I think it is a very capable camera at a very attractive price point. If Sony can come up with a lens that matches the superb sensor of the Nex series it will be a very formidable tool.

Be sure to let us know what's going on with the Sony a few months from now.

Well, even though I wish the new lenses were a little smaller, I'm glad Sony is showing what is to come in the future. I'm sure the Zeiss prime will be great.

I have both, X1 and NEX5 with kit lenses and m adapter. There is no one versus the other in my book. I like the X1 as a serious photo camera and for its superior IQ and the NEX for its gadgetry appeal, they complement one another nicely. When travelling, I generously "loan" the NEX to my GF and enjoy the X1. Problem solved:D

:)

It can be so simple. So why on earth is this thread 23 pages and 458 posts?!?
