Dan States Posted June 8, 2010 Share #21 Posted June 8, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) If the dprevew samples are an accurate indication of what the 16mm lens can do it is a piece of crap. Looks like Sony could not decide who the market was for this camera and split the difference....too bad. Hope they spit out a 24 F2 soon....one that doesn't suck please. Advertisement Posted June 8, 2010 Posted June 8, 2010 Hi Dan States, Take a look here Sony NEX 5 vs Leica x1. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
h00ligan Posted June 8, 2010 Share #22 Posted June 8, 2010 but where do I go from here ? I am just not sold on the X1 ? I hear you, it's frustrating. I am finding the x1 frustrating as well. The output is great, but speed, for what I enjoy doing, is an issue. I'm not sure where you go - nex probably isn't it. GF1 imho puts out about 90% of the x1 quality at less than half the price..losing out only on large prints or higher iso really.. if you want to stay Leica maybe an m8? vicpeh Posted June 8, 2010 Share #23 Posted June 8, 2010 You can take a picture of this beauty with a cell phone and I'd still be impressed... Actually using a cell phone would be easier. The NEX 5 with the BIG and HEAVY CZ lens is not easy to handle at all! And honestly, the current kit lenses do not do the NEX any justice at all. The pics I took with the kit lenses are not worth the server space.
jsrockit Posted June 8, 2010 Share #24 Posted June 8, 2010 They all have their short-comings. However, to me, the GF1, Ricoh GRX, and the X1 seem to be the best compromises.
Mark2 Posted June 10, 2010 Author Share #25 Posted June 10, 2010 I tried the Sony NEX5 at the Sony shop today. The built of the camera is not very good. The pancake lens looks and feels to large for the camera. I would prefer the Panasonic GF1 in terms of quality. The menu is difficult to understand. The focusing speed isn't that fast. Quite disappointing. It feels sluggish, quite similar to the Olympus E-P1. Image quality is so so. Nothing special. Maybe because they are not using high quality lenses. Given a choice I would rather buy the X1 or GF1.
Guest Chris M Posted June 10, 2010 Share #26 Posted June 10, 2010 I think Sony has come up with something very special, however I too think its too early for it to be successful. Sony is a great company, and most of the electronics I own are Sony, except for there digi cameras. I HOPE that Sony will take the NEX5 and improve on its internals and menus, only then will I dive in. I personally backed out of buying the NEX5 after DP's final review. Though if Sony is smart they will read what the interested customers are wanting out of that system and build on it. chris m.

leicanut2 Posted June 20, 2010 Share #29 Posted June 20, 2010 On the GF1 I have the 20mm and the 14-45 and the 45-200mm they all are not bad. I use the 45-200 when I go to shows where I can't get front row seats. I have had good results with it so much so that I will pick up the 100-300mm when it come out with hopes that it will be a faster lens at the 200mm range.( 400mm ) I sold the DL4 when I got the GF1. Would consider the X1 if it had lens options with at least one that would be in the 400mm range with the crop factor. Jan
AntidotePictures Posted June 20, 2010 Share #30 Posted June 20, 2010 Hi all, Am primarily a Nikon D700 user. Bought the NEX 5 recently whilst exploring buying the X1. I will probably still get an X1 as it is rather special (except for the sluggish autofocus). I heard that there may be a new version of the X1 soon to be announced? Anyway, here are some pics of the NEX 5 with pancake lens - it's an ok lens, and i am quite happy with the NEX until I get an X1! Viv Posted June 20, 2010 Share #31 Posted June 20, 2010 I will not be buying it. Whenever a mirrorless camera with a FX sensor (not DX) and 24.5 MP appears, I will give it serious consideration. Too many bells and whistles on this toy for me. It is aimed at P&S people who want to move up.

ijam Posted June 22, 2010 Share #35 Posted June 22, 2010 what i like in NEX-5 are the small size and the interchangeable lens. but i don't know how was the image quality. i own X1. really like the IQ, retro design and hot shoe! i can use it with pocket wizard and nikon flash. phancj Posted June 22, 2010 Share #36 Posted June 22, 2010 I am currently shooting with the X1 for leisure, and use a Nikon D300 as well for work (mostly macro). Seriously thought about the nex5, as its portable (like the X1) plus it allows for interchangeable lens. From web samples, the pictures look great. Actually tried the cam yesterday evening, brought my own SD card and tested it with the pancake lens. Here are my thoughts: 1) Handling was actually quite okay, I was pleasantly surprised. Build quality commensurate with pricing, no complaints. Was using the pancake lens which was comfortable to hold, and roughly the same size as the x1. 2) The shutter was not loud but somehow the vibration and a dull "thud" was very evident and annoying, like something heavy dropped inside the camera. 3) The image quality from the pancake lens was average, nothing that screams quality as compared to even normal point and shoot cameras. 4) The interface was horrendous for me since I am used to dslr buttons and the x1's simple dials, but think if given time I will probably get used to it. Nevertheless I think it is really built for beginners, but the layers of menus make working with it somehow difficult. But the menus do look cool, like sci-fi type ...haha...there is this virtual dial on the right of screen... I think with this camera either wait for some superb E mount lens to come out first, or manual focus with carl zeiss lenses, coz if the pancake lens produce average quality, I bet the zoom should fare worse. So yes, Sony is a whole lot faster in AF, but I think the X1 is a lot more accurate, most if not all photos are not only in focus but mostly very sharp. Also, the colors were not very accurate on the NEx5, in many photos the colors were smudgy and washed out. I suspect the noise reduction algorithm is overly aggressively so there is this smearing in many shots particularly low light ones. Just my experience with the Nex5 for about 20 minutes and I have used the X1 since feb so comparison may not be fair, but the shop (my friend) was helping me thru the menus and settings I wanted to try...and the pancake lens for a prime lens does not produce stunning Image quality, but I bet once we mount zeiss lens it will be different, but the shop hasnt got the adaptor yet... I guess small has it's demerits too... ( I do not think its the size, coz i use the X1 and its roughly the same size. One possibility could be the AF itself, the other would be the heavy feel of the shutter which can exaggerate camera shake...of course there is a third, which is the trial set is defective. But I distinctly notice and was rather annoyed every time I press the shutter, there is this feel like something heavy fell in the camera, do you notice that on yours? The sound of the shutter is bearable, but there is obvious vibration on the unit I tried.

The sound of the shutter is bearable, but there is obvious vibration on the unit I tried. That is one of the things that doesn't get talked about with the X1 vs. the rest of these APS cameras... the leaf shutter. You can shoot at slower shutter speeds handheld with this shutter. Obviously some manufactuers have IS to compensate. The Sony doesn't I guess.
