Leica X1: Peeling Skin, Poor Battery Door, Loose Dials?

Has anyone tried slightly tightening the screws on the dials so that they don't turn as easily? Come on...

The screws hold the dials on, they don't tighten the dials. If they did, we would all have thought of trying that...........

Well, I can certainly tell you that X1 just got back from Leica due to the peeling skin issue... and the dials are certainly loose... but not in a malfunctioning way.

I wish mine had that issue when I had sent it in.. the new texture looks nice!

I bought a brand new black X1 here in Australia in Mid January . It was defective straight out of the box . The flash unit would not stay down .As far as general quality was concerned the battery door fit was poor and the dials were loose . It has gone back to the nominated repairer and it is waiting for parts from Germany to fix the flash. Apparently Leica parts supply is very slow .

I have owned Leicas since 1968 and have spent many tens of thousands of dollars on Leica equipment over the years and the quality has always been outstanding-until now.

I have never experienced anything like this X1 .It is a $2000 joke .And sadly it appears as if it is not an exception .

My advice to Leica is to stop being in denial and get in and fix the X1 quality issues fast before they destroy your brand reputation.

Needless to say I regret ever buying the wretched thing .It had better be good when it is repaired and it had better stay fixed

It's cool how non-owners of the X1 feel the need to come and bash the camera here...

I have read what you said and I have read the above comments. I do not feel that the above comments were "bashing" the X1. I have the X1 and I love it but I feel the frustration of others here. Why is it that if someone gives a positive review about something that we all clap and smile and it is somehow morally good? Why is it when someone gives a negative review that we scorn and claim that negativity is a moral wrong? A critique is a critique, good or bad. We are all entitled to our opinions. I find that negative critiques are actually more useful. I know what the X1 does right and I hope that the negative critiques will encourage Leica to do better.

My X1 is defective too, it is sometimes too sharp, I gotta tune down sharpening in camera.

I am pretty sure EVERY problem of the X1 is totally known to leica.

How can it not be when there are zillions of threads and posts on these, and repetitive too?? Just google "X1 problems" and see ....

If leica wanted to do anything, they sure would have by now.

My two cents.

The X1 is a compact, manufactured with QC like any other compact camera, with leica prices. It takes good pictures. It is not in the same league in terms of build quality compared to the M9, which some has experienced bad QC as well.

Whats happening with Leica? no one but leica can answer that. Meanwhile their cameras take good pictures. So do many other camera makers, we do have a choice.

It is perhaps more constructive if we skip these complaints in this forum, as they are beginning to feel really old. Multiple thread same problems and leica appears nonchalant.

I think some problems will be resolved by the X2, and maybe new ones will pop up. Who knows?

I expect my X1 to last approximately 2 years (warranty period) and any longer is a bonus. Meanwhile I'll enjoy it and when it is gone I may/may not buy the X2 depending on what the competition offers.

I do not see the need for this thread coz its simply not new. EVERY single issue put forth here have been done so ad nauseum in the past. Really. One year after owning the camera and these same threads pop up. Crazy.

For the new/prospective owners, perhaps it is more revealing if you search the forum for the problems. Lots of info will show up.:)

I say this with the best of intentions for everyone here.

I hope the moderators will close this thread, for the simple reason it is the umpteen thread based on the same issues.

Weird problem CJ. Are you using Aperture? I noticed Aperture has a profile for the X1 and automatically sharpens to .75 (along with other things). Lightroom may do the same. Just a thought.

I'm kidding.:D

But my settings for sharpening is always medium low though.

David, you misunderstand me. Lately, there's been a rash of negative commentary, by 'non owners'. It's not just this thread, it's the X1 sub forum, and certain threads in general. Negative commentary by owners/previous owners is one thing, as it's bounded in personal experience. Bashing by non owners is quite another. That was my point.

There's a big difference between helpful and constructive criticsm and the sort that argues from the specific to the general - "I had a problem therefore all examples without exception are c**p". Or even worse - "I hear that there's a problem so the camera/whatever must be rubbish and the company's dreadful and I"ll never buy any of their goods."

Now where have I read things similar to that recently?;)

I'm just marveling at how many threads in the X1 forum get started on this "topic" and end up the same way.

I haven't had my black X1 very long and I'm still getting use to shooting with it but so far, I enjoy it very much. I knew full well about its limitations before buying and realized I would have to adapt to its quirks. I wanted highest IQ in this form factor and was entirely on board with having to think a bit more about how best to capture an image in a given situation. I use other cameras for differing needs and circumstances but the X1 is really for my "enjoyment" - that is how I view it anyway.

I have had none of the QC problems mentioned in this thread but I realize some may arise with time. My guess is that the problems aren't as widespread as these threads might suggest. I just like taking pictures with the X1. I also like reading camera forums. Maybe most happy X1 owners fall into the former category but not the latter....;)
