andybarton Posted June 2, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Many thanks to everyone for their patience. After a lot of hard work by many people, the Leica User Forum Book is now ready to purchase from Blurb. Just a little background for those new to the Forum. Back in the autumn of last year, a few of us had the idea that, given the amount of talent that is evident in the Photo section of this Forum, we should collect some photographs and publish a book. It was also proposed that the proceeds of the book should be for a charity, and not for the profit of any one individual. The outline of the idea was in this thread I am VERY pleased to announce that, some 7 - 8 months later, the fruits of the work that has gone on since then is now available to buy from Blurb. For every book that is bought, just over £5 (US$7.30 / €6 at 2/6/10 rates) will be donated to the chosen charity. This will add to the £7,200 or so that we have already raised. We had over 500 submissions to the judging panel, who had the extremely difficult task of choosing around 120 to be included in the book. Having shown Copy 0 to a few people this week, the conclusion is that every one of the photographs included is worthy of its place and the whole book is an excellent showcase for the forum and the talents of the members who contributed. I am also pleased to confirm that Copy 1 will be available to view at the Zingst Meeting being held in Germany this weekend. Watch this space for details of a little get-together that we are trying to arrange to offer all of us a communal pat on the back for a job well done... On behalf of the team that put the book together, especially Steve Unsworth and Bill Palmer who have put an incredible amount of time and effort into this, I would like to thank everyone that has contributed to this project to date and thank everyone in advance for their purchase of the book. This really is something of which we can all be very proud. The Leica User Forum Charity Book 2010
Advertisement Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Hi andybarton, Take a look here LUF Charity Book - >250 sold. I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
stunsworth Posted June 2, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 2, 2010 I'd like to add one thing. Regardless of the effort put into the book by all those involved in its production, the true stars are those who contributed photographs and donated to the charity without any guarantee that their photographs would be included in the final book. The amount of money already raised has exceeded my wildest expectations, and every copy of the book that's sold will add to the amount raised. So a big, big thank you to everyone who submitted a photograph, and another big, big thank you to everyone who buys the book.

gravastar Posted June 3, 2010 Share #4 Posted June 3, 2010 Is anyone having a problem in buying the book from the Blurb site? I've had several attempts yesterday and today. Each time after choosing the shipping method and clicking to continue checkout I get the message that the page cannot be displayed. I've ordered several Blurb books before without problems. Maybe it's a temporary bug and I'll try later. Bob.
andybarton Posted June 3, 2010 Author Share #5 Posted June 3, 2010 I hope there's not a problem. Bill will be along later and I am sure that this is something that he can fix. I have heard of one person who has bought (from Zingst as it happens), so hopefully this is a temporary problem. (Edit: I know that one has been ordered in London this morning too. Can you try an alternative web browser?)
Falstaff Posted June 3, 2010 Share #6 Posted June 3, 2010 I do not think that Andy will mind my chiming in here, but yesterday I was having coffee with him and Rolo and was lucky enough to have a look at the book which he proudly pulled out of his briefcase. I can say that it is a nicely packaged and presented book with all the images of very high quality indeed. Certainly a lot of work for those involved in it's production. It is something you would see displayed on the shelves of a bookshop and would certainly add to your own collection. Falstaff
ns_ng Posted June 3, 2010 Share #7 Posted June 3, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Hi, I have just placed an order and it went through smoothly. I would like to thank the whole team for taking the effort and time to put together this wonderful book. It must have been an Herculean task. Andy, thanks for your comments in the Editor's Choice. Nick De Marco Posted June 3, 2010 Share #8 Posted June 3, 2010 I just bought one on blurb too and it went through fine Preview looks great and I reckon this could be a deserved blurb bestseller If there are any reviews of it in other publications please send to blurb as they might then also promote it (I noticed after LFI magazine covered my Cuba book and I told Blurb my Cuba book became a 'staff favourite') Nick
andybarton Posted June 3, 2010 Author Share #9 Posted June 3, 2010 We will be advising everyone that we can think of re the book, so hopefully there will be a cross-fertilisation of interest over the coming months. Any "Editor's Comments" on any of the chapters are well deserved
Steve Ash Posted June 3, 2010 Share #10 Posted June 3, 2010 My order went through smooth, too. What about posting about the book on Leica's facebook site to draw attention of potential buyers? Regards Steve
andybarton Posted June 3, 2010 Author Share #11 Posted June 3, 2010 Facebook links are in hand - by those that take part in Facebook Ditto Linkedin. It is also being Tweeted like mad, linked to in blogs and I am speaking with Leica UK this afternoon. I have some contacts with the serious press photography bloggers here too, so an email will be off to them shortly. There is an open invitation to anyone who wants to promote the book, via whatever means, to do so. There are html widget and button things on the Blurb site that can be used. They don't work on this forum software, unfortunately, but they do elsewhere.
wparsonsgisnet Posted June 3, 2010 Share #12 Posted June 3, 2010 Just bot mine. The PayPal connex worked fine. Blurb says it should arrive by the 17th. MANY thanks to Bill and all the guys. CONGRAT's to all of us in the book. It's rarified company, not to mention the nice guys. Best regards to all,
louloumum Posted June 3, 2010 Share #13 Posted June 3, 2010 My order confirmation just went through too.... Not completely smoothly though - PayPal payment (which is my preferred) was rejected twice and then I gave up and accepted to tap in my card details. I'm excited to see the book... A big hug and thanks to all of you who did a huge job in getting this all together. I'm amazed to hear how wonderfully well the fund raising has done thanks to you guys !! masjah Posted June 3, 2010 Share #14 Posted June 3, 2010 Well, I finally managed to order my copy, though not without difficulty. The interface was very flaky to say the least - kept getting page unobtainable error messages or text based pages (IE8 browser). Let's hope it works! I did finally get the "purchase successful" screen.
bill Posted June 3, 2010 Share #15 Posted June 3, 2010 Just as a matter of interest the books are currently selling at the rate of approximately one and a half per hour... Please, if anyone is having problems ordering the book (after having cleared cache, and using a sensible browser) could they raise a complaint with Blurb? Everything is correctly set up, so should just "work". Regards, Bill
andybarton Posted June 3, 2010 Author Share #16 Posted June 3, 2010 I have had no problem making dummy purchases with either Safari or Firefox. I will try with Chrome later.
pop Posted June 3, 2010 Share #17 Posted June 3, 2010 "Flaky" describes it quite well. It asked for my data about four times until it gave up and accepted what I had entered. The login page to paypal was shown in what appeared to be dutch. I am still awaiting the order confirmation. I trust that the half book Bill mentioned above wasn't mine. With my heartfelt thanks to you guys who finished that huge heap of work.

I too have tried on four separate occasions but just as I expect to get through to the payment bit, the web site bombs out on me and I get an error message "site unavailable" and yet I can get straight back in again immediately! It seems to be the secure section of the site that is having difficulty..Great pity though.
