jklotz Posted June 2, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) Lieca has over $1,000,000,000 in back order for the .095 Nocti! And that's just in the USA! Amazing.
Advertisement Posted June 2, 2010 Posted June 2, 2010 Hi jklotz, Take a look here My dealer told me today..... I'm sure you'll find what you were looking for!
andybarton Posted June 2, 2010 Share #2 Posted June 2, 2010 LOL! Thanks for that. Best laugh I've had all day.
cocker Posted June 2, 2010 Share #3 Posted June 2, 2010 Gosh! I bet Leica are worried about such spectacular performance from their rivals Lieca.
erlingmm Posted June 2, 2010 Share #4 Posted June 2, 2010 Maybe he said million, not billion? 100 Nocti is a lot, but believable...
AlanJW Posted June 2, 2010 Share #5 Posted June 2, 2010 Not very plausible. Say lens costs $10,000 Orders for 1000 would be $10 million Orders for 10000 would be $100 million Would need orders for 100,000 to reach $1 Billion. And supposedly this is for the US only! And how long would it take to produce 100,000 Noctiluxes?
luigi bertolotti Posted June 2, 2010 Share #6 Posted June 2, 2010 If they fullfill the orders, seems there will be much more Noctiluxes than cameras to mount them onto... Getting a lens BEFORE having a camera to use it isn't rare (happens that I just made it, but is a special case...), but I wonder which kind of backorder of Leicas they'll have in some months... adan Posted June 2, 2010 Share #7 Posted June 2, 2010 Advertisement (gone after registration) 100,000 Noctis on backorder (actually it would have to be more, since dealer price is less than the retail price)? I doubt it. OTOH, 100 in the U.S. (2 per state) doesn't sound like "a lot," either. I imagine Manhattan and Hollywood have easily generated 50 orders all by themselves. Globally? Counting the nouveau riche in Shenzen, Beijing, Singapore, Dubai, Moskva? 2,000-5,000 ($18,000,000-$45,000,000) wouldn't surprise me.

Yes, those are reasonable numbers... as a comparision, in the first 3 years of the Noctilux 1,0, they made 4 batches of 1000 each... 1976 to 1978... and they were hard times for Leica (indeed, they waited 3 years to build another batch of 700). UliWer Posted June 2, 2010 Share #9 Posted June 2, 2010 Not very plausible.Say lens costs $10,000 ... A Noctilux which really had .095 would cost a little bit more. (The English way of putting kommas in numbers where in German we use points, and points where we use kommas, and then even leaving out the zero before a point, constantly makes me dizzy...) m8point2 Posted June 2, 2010 Share #10 Posted June 2, 2010 I heard that BP just ordered 94,500 Noctiluxes which they plan to use to plug their leaking well in the Gulf of Mexico. Something about the special properites of the glass apparently makes the Noctiluxes better than golf balls for this task. BP is hoping for rapid delivery from Leica, so that may slow the production of the new 35mm Lux. el

bill Posted June 2, 2010 Share #13 Posted June 2, 2010 Dr. Evil: You know, I have one simple request. And that is to have sharks with frickin' Noctiluxes attached to their heads! Now evidently my cycloptic colleague informs me that that cannot be done. Ah, would you remind me what I pay you people for, honestly? Throw me a bone here! What do we have? Number Two: Visoflexes. Dr. Evil: [pause] Riiight. Number Two: They're mutated Visoflexes. Dr. Evil: Are they expensive? Number Two: Absolutely. Dr. Evil: Oh well, that's a start. James - you weren't by any chance trading stocks the day someone's "fat finger" typo dropped the Dow 1000 points in 5 minutes, were you? "I'm placing an order for 100 Noctis at $10,000,000 each.....Oh!, No, wait!" ___________ Bill, are you recommending Dr. Evil as the next Leica armchair CEO? At least he has a name to match their next camera....

ho_co Posted June 3, 2010 Share #18 Posted June 3, 2010 Just one question: Have you ever got a firm answer when you ask a Leica employee how many whatever's they have backordered? I haven't; maybe you're luckier. "My dealer told me..." means he got a neat story he wants you to hear, nothing more. I've heard reps make up stories and heard dealers pass them along slightly exaggerated until they get completely blown out of proportion. Before the US invaded Iran, a person who "got it from a good source" told me it was certain that Saddam had nuclear missiles. Recommendation: When you hear a good tale, why don't you try to verify it? I'm not criticizing posting it; it's fun. And the thread title is perfect. Thanks top to toe! OK... end to one of the funniest thread... as erlingmm said, that's quite normal for USA. (If it's the figure for your dealer ONLY... HE is a happy dealer... )

I've heard reps make up stories and heard dealers pass them along slightly exaggerated until they get completely blown out of proportion. At the same time, we all know that people love to gossip and share information they shouldn't ... As for exaggeration, in France we would say that the dealer went through Marseille on his way... This being said, 100 Noctis back-ordered is a credible number. Good for Leica.
