Want to buy the X1 - Should I wait?

Hello,

This is my first post on the Leica forum. I want to purchase the X1 but I have been hearing stories that Leica pulled the X1 out of stores to update their firmware, and perhaps other issues, after DPReview posted its review of the camera. Is this true? Should I wait to purchase the X1? Also, I live in NYC and supposedly, if I buy this camera from the EU, I could save quite a bit of money due to the exchange rates. Where can I go to get this camera for the cheapest possible price?

Thanks.

If possible, I'd wait until the camera is in stock with the large dealers, and Leica shows a little more concern for its customers. By the time you add VAT(value added tax) & shipping, the exchange rate will mean little, at least for now.

No need to wait - the camera I bought March 29 is still as perfect as when I got it. They are available from time to time from several U.S. dealers at $1995, and no tax if ordered out of state for most cases. Try connecting to the Leica X1 In-stock Tracker website for up to the minute tracking .

Thanks guys,

But does anyone know if Leica pulled the X1 from the shelves after the DPReview? Any word about firmware updates or tightening the loose controls? Is there credibility to these rumors that Leica wants to improve the X1 before a larger release?

I'm about 99 percent certain that the only firmware update was in 2009, when they moved from the pre-production version 0.7 or whatever to the final 1.0 version. And that had nothing to do with DPReview. Presumably there will be an update one of these days, but no worries about that - all of the issues are well known and thousands of users are waiting patiently, while using their X1's every day.

There is no VAT on exports from the EU. The current USD/Euro exch. rate allows for quite some saving.

I have now emailed several Euro photo shops. With the current price set at 1550 Euros, the most I can save is $45. If you know the place where I can get a significant savings, please let me know.

My local Leica dealer is Service Photo in Baltimore and I have posted about them before. I was in their store this afternoon and they have two X1's on their shelf! I was very surprised, as they are so difficult to get right now. Just thought I would let everyone know. I like to support these guys because they are a small "mom & pop" store with an excellent reputation for customer service. Hope this helps.

If you are looking for the cheapest possible price, then you should wait for a few months and buy a used one. At this point, you will not "save" a lot of money. This camera retails for $1995 in the US, if you can get it. You will probably end up spending more money trying to find the best deal (I am assuming time = money). If you are not in a rush, give it a few months and see if the supply position improves.

ravinj, as a US buyer, you can save money by ordering from Europe... many of us have. AND it is shipped in one day. I saved $150 by ordering from Austria when there wasn't any stock in the USA. Time does equal money.

To the OP, perhaps the EU dealers have already bumped up the prices to comensate for the tightening exchange rate?

How much time did you spend until you found a dealer in Austria that was able to ship you the camera in a day? If it was less than 1 hr, then saving $150 is worth it. Also, remember that when buying the camera from a non-US dealer, you are taking a chance. In case it arrives broken or something goes wrong then the savings will turn into an expensive proposition.

Well, the reason why I posted this is because I do not need to have the X1 for right now. Financially speaking, the X1 is also just slightly out of reach for me. This is a huge purchase and so every penny I save is a penny earned. I refuse to settle for lesser cameras and have decided on the X1. I just need to get it for the cheapest possible price. I work across the street from the New York Stock Exchange and I am feeling the recession big time.

Hello neighbor! (I work two blocks from Wall Street). I found one website of a shop based in Austria, that seems to have this in stock at a reasonable price: https://www.leicashop.com/catalog/index.php?language=en

You may want to check with them.

Have you tried the X1 in person at a dealer? If not, let me know and we can meet one of these days near J&R and you can try my X1 out.

It was the only dealer with stock at the time, someone posted that they had them and we ordered them, it was that easy...

If it arrived broken or something went wrong, I'll send it to Leica NJ under warranty... what's the big deal about that? The Leica Shop in Austria is a reputable dealer.

To my experience, USA is the place to obtain all photo equipment at the lowest price including Leica. I bought most of my Leicas, many M lenses, M7 in the USA.

This time I bought my X1 from Switzerland because it is the only place where I can buy immediately, the price is ok. I still believe it is possible to buy it at a lower price in the USA.

I am extremely happy with X1, ease of use, menus, functionality, etc and the results of course...

Hakki Üzel
