What do you like best about the X1 ?

@carcam it's actually worse on the whole on the xt than the new kit lens..maybe it allows more flaws in the sensor to show. So now I have to find x1 quality photos in a dslr. :p like I said, what I like about the x1 is the fact it makes my back hurt less, by thinning my wallet as I spend more and more trying to get there with zooms on other systems!

Joking aside, the iq is really amazing..and unbelievable in a package that size.

Thanks for all the feedback, I think I get the general response,,,my question was vis a vis the ability to use an adapter with m lenses on the gf1 ,which is something you cant do with dlx4? but it appears to be unanimous that the image quality of the x1 even giving its inability to use other lenses still trumps the gf1 and lens possibility,am I reading this correctly?

by a "serious "shot,,,I meant that as someone who loves macro ,and for a long time used a nikon d80 with an incredible macro lens, the dlux4 is not what I would choose for such shots, maybe I just havent really seen what the dlux can do but,I thought, that the gf1 with a requisite m macro lens might be for these kind of shots which I like best.I am concerned that the X1 has been "branded" by Leica to do only one thing extremely simply and well ,but does not have flexibility for much outside of this.,however I am not financially ready to go to a 9 etc.I saw some stunning hd movies today with a gf1 and noctilux lens,,,OMG,,,I guess I am thinking this( lumix) might be a way to get around the expense of M9 and have some more flexibility within the incredibly portable size of these cameras,,(,the noctilux lens!!!! and I was saying I was concerned about cost,,,LOL)

I think it would be a shame to use the Noctilux on a u4/3 camera. It isn't optimized for that sensor size and just seems like a waste. Perhaps a Nokton f/1.1 would be a better compliment price / features wise.

You are probably right,,however look at the post by the japanese fellow,! it didnt do too bad I would say,(it was video posts,,astonishing actually, certainly doesnt appear to be a waste, though of course this 3/4 is not what its meant for clearly),though I will look into the nokton,,,per your suggestion? does my point make any sense though to use the gf 1 with its interchangeability on lens capability as a nice foil with the dlux4?and keeping down size.

It seems quite a few of the responders have owned or still own both cameras. The gf1 takes nice pics, in good light. The x1 takes better pics particularly in less light. You can compare the stop advantage of the panny lens and the stop advantage of iso on the x1, but it doesn't even out in my experience. I am not sure why this is..perhaps someone else can answer if just as focal distance is affected by sensor crop, is aperture manipulated based on crop at all? Because the panny 1.7 to me on 2x crop doesn't seem to do any better than the 2.8 on 1.5 crop in my experience..

Any thoughts on that experts?

it acts like a real camera should...

manual aperture/shutter controls, no distracting zoom, relatively portable and stealth, and IQ that does not require salvaging in post...not to mention solid build, design, and a good lens.

We all know the limitations- pretty obvious. However, I'm getting some amazing pictures that I didn't expect. I find I'm taking it everywhere and maybe that's part of it. I took my S90 with me a lot but never got the quality images that I get with the X1. My M9 is a destination camera for me and I love the files and the prints are like no other, but i find it too expensive to take all the places I take the X1- hiking, mntg bike riding, kayaking, etc. I find I can live with the slow autofocusing (probably because it takes me at least that long to focus my M9) and the loose dials are a pita and an obvious design flaw (come on, Leica engineers- how hard can that be) but it's so easy to check and correct that it's not a deal breaker for me.

So back to my original question-

I like the small size, the Leica look and ease of menu/adjustments. And the pictures that come out that little camera are beyond my expectation and worthy of big prints.

That's an easy one.

1 is the size.

2 is quality is good enough

3 is looks.

I also own a Canon 1D4 and a Oly E-P1.

Since this tread is about what I like best of the X1, I will not say what I don't like with it

I also really like the optical viewfinder. It does make it a little bit bigger but it's so bright and easy to frame with. And I got the lovely and inexpensive CV one from Cameraquest.

And Edward, I wish I knew the answer to great IQ in a real small dslr. Looked into the E-420 but at some point, it gets close enough to a moderate sized dslr that it's not worth it.

Our quest for the perfect small camera continues but I really am enjoying the X1.

I am astounded by the image quality! But then, that's why I bought this camera. The IQ totally transcends whatever fault people may find with the camera, does it not? The photo is what people will see, not the back story.

Images can be cropped severely and still retain a high degree of integrity. Makes it all worthwhile. ;)

OK for the record:

1. Image quality vs. small size

2. Manual dial controls & dedicated buttons

3. Fixed lens, no endless fiddling with lenses and/or zooming

4. Looks, elegance, no average point & shoot

999. Speed... :D

And I don't even have mine yet. A few days and counting...

Richard.

Yes X1 is slow and maybe it's one more reason why i like it!

The life, mine for sure, is just speedy enough, so sometimes it's good to slowdown and X1 helps you.

It helps you too be patient again

… or maybe not :)

More seriously,

light weight,

compactness,

i can have it more or less all the time,

sober look,

simple menu,

very silent operation,

fixed lens means no fight with dust,

the certainty i can shoot a picture with the same IQ than with my older Nikon D2X three years ago and even better at high iso,

are the reason why i like my X1.
