I have recently bought a new Summicron 35mm F2 Asph lens from R G Lewis in London, After a few days use,I like the lens a lot,

however i found the pictures took with this lens is much less sharper in the center compare to my other lens, even less sharper

than my Voigtlander 35mm F2.5 pancake. I attached two photos taken with both lenses with my M8.

As you can see the center area of the Voigtlander is a lot sharper and more detailed. I asked a few people and they said the Summicron 35/2A

suppose to be really sharp cross the whole picture, any idea about this?

Thanks very much!

(The first two photos taken with Summicron, and the last two taken with Voigtlander Pancake II)

Check to see if your lens focuses accurately . Put a ruler at a 45 degree angle to the lens and shot 4-5 images focusing on a specific location. Check the images in your computer. This looks like backfocus but you can figure this out in 5 minutes. If its off ...search on calibration and you will find more than enough information. The 35 asph is very sharp .

Thanks very much indeed, I also doubt it's backfocus as well. I need to check it.

Does look like back-focus to me too. In both cases the 'middle' of the image is closer than the area that looks sharp.

I have had a number of M8's consistently back-focus, you should try the test mentioned above - but try it with some other lenses as well to determine if it's the 35cron or if it's the camera body. In my case it was the camera body, but it wasn't apparent on all lenses either due to the depth of field or the lens (35lux) being slightly front-focusing.

Here's a recent shot done with the M8 and 35mm Summicron ASPH. This will give you an idea of what the focus is like wide open.

Thanks very much guys, I have figured out it's a backfocus issue, sorted out with a 2mm allen key, The forum has some invaluable information.

If your first lens and/or other lenses were fine then your lens should have been adjusted, not your camera.

I think you are right, so far all my other lenses are fine, only the new cron 35mm is off, somehow I got it in focus by adjusting the camera, tested the other 3 lenses as well, apart from infinite focus is not hitting the 8 mark( slightly off but focused fine ), everything else is fine. Maybe I should get my dealer to adjust the lens, afterall it's only a week old.

Thank you!

Hmm.. that sounds like the whole set is slightly off now. Maybe it would be wise to take the whole kit over to a reputable repair shop like CRR and have it tested/adjusted. It is normally not an expensive operation and it will do wonders for your photography.

It sounds like the issue is with your lens. Personally, I would take it back for a replacement.

I am not sure about the other lens now, coz I have been using them on daily basis for more than a year and never had any serious backfocus issues, Jaap do you know any good repair shop around London? Is CRR in london or should I just take the body and lens back to my dealer and ask them to tweak the set for me?

Thanks a lot!

I am afraid so yes, coz the focus ring can be rotated to far left beyond the 0.7M minimum distance, more like 0.45m or something like that, also the aperture ring can be rotated to the left beyond F2 as well, so I assume it's the lens.

Thank you Wilfredo!

That lens needs to go back to leica now!!!

Don't mess with adjusting your camera anymore or you muddy the whole situation. The 35cron asph is an amazingly sharp lens as many will attest, sounds like you got one that got through with some problems!!

I think so, I will take the lens back to the shops first thing tomorrow, it's true the lens is extremely sharp after I tweaked the body, but indeed this is not a solution.

The camera might be tweaked too much to a mess now, I will take the lens back. Thanks!

Sounds like the camera and all lenses need to go to Leica and let them sort them all out. Which they will.
