All:

I picked up a new M9 two days ago, and am noticing a presumed glitch in the "play" menu. In short, preview images are only variably visible. At times preview slots that are to be filled by an actual image instead populate with a label such as "L1000024". First believing that this was temporary, and that the camera needed to process acquired data, I gave it no thought. But the problem persists, and the "labelled" slots never turn into actual preview images.

Actual photos are stored under these "labels" when the SDHC card is transferred to a computer, but when the unerased card is inserted back into the camera, absent preview images are again a problem.

The problem is sporadic, i.e. doesn't affect any one particular image in a sequence, but occurs consistently.

I have tried reformatting and overwriting my SDHD card, but this does not solve the problem.

Any thoughts?

Standard Operating Procedure when anything is amiss is to remove the battery ... charge it fully overnight, insert it back in and set the camera back to factory defaults.

One of my M9s wouldn't show the preview when I shot in portrait orientation and then rotated the camera back to landscape orientation. It would show at first but it disappeared when I rotated the camera. It seemed a big issue and that maybe the tilt sensor was screwed up ... but once I reset everything, it hasn't done it since.

Somebody else will remember better than me, but I think its something to do with the .xmp files being modified by Lightroom when you download the images, so when you put the card back in the camera it can't be read? Anyway, when you've downloaded the images delete them from the card, ideally by reformatting, that should clear it up.

Well I've had this on my M8 once or twice - solved by reformatting I think BUT I also stopped using the 'suspect' card which I think may have been the root cause of the problem, together with the possibility of a dubious card reader. I've now settled on Sandisk 16MB Type 2 cards which I've found to be thoroughly reliable, together with a Hama card reader (as used by my local camera shop where they've found this reader to be the most consistent at reading files from innumerable cameras into their printing system). However I have also adopted the practice of 'locking' the SDHC card when reading it via the reader which can do no harm and potentially is helpful as it prevents modification of any card files.

Another way to cause this is to try and read pictures produced by a different-model Leica camera that has used the same card. E.G. Digilux 2 pictures will show up as file names/numbers with no image if you try to read them on an M8/M9.

The camera sees a file name that appears to be a Leica image (L100xxxx) - but the file format isn't an M8/9 format, so it just tosses up the alphanumeric instead.

Thanks to all for the suggestions. I have tried two SDHC cards to no avail. I still get a random smattering of "L1000044"-type preview screens without the corresponding picture. Both cards had the actual image on them and transferred easily to my Mac.

Not keen on returning the camera or sending it back for repair after just taking possession of it... Will try another card at the store tomorrow.

Any further suggestions are welcome.
